2013년 Vertikal 앨범 발매 이후, Cult of Luna는 멤버 변동을 겪으면서 잠시 쉬는 시간을 갖는 듯 했다. Johannes Persson에 의하면 이미 신규 앨범의 컨셉은 나와있던 찰나였으나, 밴드는 2014년 Beyond the Redshift 페스티벌 이후로 지속적인 소통을 해오던 Julie Christmas와의 관계에 주목했다. 밴드는 Julie의 솔로 앨범인 The Bad Wife에 세션으로 참여하고 싶을 정도로 팬심을 보였으며, 당시에 작업하던 데모 트랙을 보내 가사를 쓰고 보컬을 녹음해달라는 요청을 하기도 했다. 콜라보레이션의 결과가 마음에 들었던 것인지, Cult of Luna는 Julie에게 정규 앨범 작업을 제안했다. 스웨덴의 우메아와 미국의 뉴욕에서 각각 레코딩과 믹싱이 이루어졌고, 작업의 주체들은 2015년 Cult of Luna의 소규모 미국 투어가 있기 전까지 실제로 만난 적이 없었지만 Mariner의 완성도는 엄청난 수준이었다.
Somewhere Along the Highway와 Vertikal에서 선사했던 도회적이고 디스토피아적인 사운드에서 벗어나, 우주를 탐험하는 느낌의 컨셉을 잡은 Mariner는 Alrakis, Mesarthim와 같은 블랙메탈 밴드들이 들려주는 광활함에 우주선 하나를 갖다놓고 해상도를 조금 올린 분위기이다. Julie Christmas는 부드러운 미성과 날카로운 스크리밍을 섞어 완벽한 완급조절을 보여주며 팬들의 찬사를 받았고, ... See More
