캐나다 출신의 Heavy Metal 밴드 Anvil의 첫 정규앨범. Anvil의 결성은 73년까지 거슬러 올라간다. 밴드는 당시 고등학생이었던 Steve Kudlow와 Robb Reiner의 의기투합이 Anvil의 첫 시작이었다. 이들이 정식으로 라인업을 다 갖춘 것은 78년이 되어서였다. 이때 밴드에 가입했던 인물이 Dave Allison과 Ian Dickson이었다. 멤버 구성이 다 갖추어진 밴드는 당시에만 해도 Anvil이 아닌 Lips라는 이름을 가졌던 Hard Rock 밴드였다. Lips는 3년 정도를 지방에서 라이브 무대를 돌아다니면서 점차 이름을 알려나갔다. 밴드는 그후 모은 돈을 쏟아부어 독립 앨범을 발표했는데, 그 앨범이 바로 그들의 역사적인 데뷔 앨범 Hard 'N' Heavy였다. 이 앨범은 당시 Lips가 로컬 밴드에 불과했었던지라 흥행을 하는 데에는 한계가 있었지만, 대형 레이블인 Attic Records사의 눈에 띄게 해 주었다. 그 당시 계약을 하면서 Lips는 개명을 하는데, 그 때 정한 이름이 바로 Anvil이었다. Lips의 이름을 걸고 만들어졌던 Hard 'N' Heavy도 Anvil이라는 이름으로 다시 발매되었다. Attic Records사의 후원을 받았어도 큰 성공을 거두지는 못했지만, Hard 'N' Heavy는 좀더 많이 밴드를 알리는 계기가 되었다.

First Anvil album, warming up for Metal on Metal. School love was one of the first hardrock songs I heard and I was then already blown away by the power and great riffs, solo's and excellent drumming of this band.
