12. The Path to Our Twilight - Volterra (4:10)
Eleven had fallen, and now twelfth hour begins.
7000 meters of rocks
Placed to defend the city
Mark now, in the darkest period,
The border between Rome
And the free Etruscans.
These walls consist of large stones,
Nine Roman feet smaller,
The greater twelve units.
All entirely composed of rock
Without embankment,
Amazing human work
To celebrate the divine.
Have you ever walked in absence of light?
Have you ever seen an horizon of pure darkness,
Where shadows mingling with the shadows,
Empty creatures fill the void of nothingness,
And not even the purest blade
Mentions the slightest sign of glitter?
So was the landscape
The augurs’ eye could see over the walls…
…From the top of the hill,
Once all the other lights
in the sky of Etruria went out.
Peace was asked to practice,
But it was just a way
To surrender to the darkness,
When the last sacred hill fell.
“The gods have left, the people of the sea.”
Thuchulca, so ruthless,
Had fun seeing them suffer.
Etruria will no longer exist
Except in our hearts.
Swallowed, now she is in the stomach
Of the lustful, greedy Rome.
It is corroded by stomach acid,
Not even the mighty walls can resist.
