93년, 몇 년간 휴지기에 들어가 있었던 Grave Digger는 The Reaper로 Heavy Metal씬에서 성공적으로 재기했다. 멤버 구성이 바뀌고 음악도 다소 변해있었지만, 헤비 메탈 팬들은 Grave Digger의 귀환을 반갑게 맞이했다. Heart of Darkness는 Grave Digger가 Heavy Metal씬에 복괴한 후 두 번째로 발표한 작품으로 상당히 뛰어난 역량을 담아낸 앨범이다. 전작 The Reaper와 달라진 점은 전반적으로 작품의 분위기나 사운드가 어둡고 무거워졌다는 것이다. Heart of Darkness가 다루는 주제 는 증오, 이중성, 배신 등 인간의 어두운 측면에 관해서이다. 이러한 주제들은 어두우면서도 심각해진 밴드의 연주와 매우 잘 어울린다. 이렇게 어둡고 무거운 연주를 담아내면서 Grave Digger는 캐나다를 대표하는 Thrash Metal 밴드 Annihilator의 영향을 받았다고 해외에서는 언급되고 있다. 앨범 전체에서 풍기고 있는 어두운 분위기를 보면 그러한 평가가 일견 타당하다고도 보인다. 그러나 굳이 Annihilator의 영향보다는 이러한 구조나 멜로디에서 직접적으로 연관있어 보이는 Iron Maiden의 영향이 좀더 직접적으로 드러나 있는 걸로 보는게 좀더 타당하다고 생각한다.

Grave Digger start to pick up speed here after a rather uneventful career of below average Heavy/Power Metal. This release itself isn't incredible but an important step in the right direction.

This is as close as you can get to "perfection". A fantastic album with a dark, heavy and great atmosphere. A masterpiece!
