초기 Black Metal이라는 장르가 나오기도 전 이미 Venom의 영향을 강하게 받은 밴드이자 "First Wave Of Black Metal"의 Bathory와 함께 많은 "Second Wave Of Black Metal" 밴드들에게 영향을 끼친 Hellhammer는 거의 Hardcore Punk나 Speed Metal과도 같은 단순하고 담백한 진행의 사운드였는데 [Satanic Rites]부터는 신경질적이고 상당히 건조한 Guitar톤이 연주된다. Thrash Metal 사운드와 Crust Punk 사운드가 뒤섞여져 있지만 나쁘진 않고 아쉬운건 미완성 상태의 밴드라 곡의 유기성이 좀 떨어지는 문제점과 확 당기는 곡이 없는 점이다.

이미 많은 분이 말씀해주신 것과 같이 스래시, 블랙, 데스, 그리고 둠까지... 초기 익스트림 메탈의 모든 게 담겨 있습니다. 음산한 인트로를 거쳐 시작하는 Messiah는 단순하지만 청자를 어둠 속으로 서서히 끌어들이고, Triumph of Death의 처절함과 기괴함은 청자도 절규하게 만듭니다. "역사적 의미는 있고 음악은 별로"라는 평이 지배적이지만 저는 정말 좋아합니다.

Damn, I loved this so much. I can tell it's a bit sloppy, but listening to it gives a special effect: it makes you the coolest person in the world. All in all, the music is good / not great, but the coolness factor makes it worth listening to again & again.

분명 메탈 역사상 매우 중요한 앨범이고, 못 들어줄 음악인 것도 절대 아니지만 딱 그 정도. 아무리 봐도 후대 밴드들의 앞길을 터 주었다는 의미를 빼면 굳이 이 앨범을 들어야 할 필요는 없다.

곡 제목들을 보면 Mayhem멤버들에게 엄청난 귀감이긴 했나보다. 그치만 음악이 너무 딱딱하고 거칠어서 소화시키기 좀 힘들다. Celtic Frost의 To Mega Therion의 전신에 가깝다
