Witherfall의 데뷔 앨범 Nocturnes and Requiems도 꽤나 어둡고 무거운 작품이었지만, 두 번째 앨범 A Prelude to Sorrow는 그러한 양상이 더욱더 심화된 듯하다. 이는 아마도 밴드의 작고한 멤버에 대한 애도 차원에서 그리된 것이 아닌가 싶다. 밴드의 드러머였던 Adam Sagan의 부재는 이 앨범의 분위기에 영향을 끼쳤다고 생각된다. 분위기가 더 어두워진 것을 뺀다면 이 앨범은 전작의 노선과 동일하다. 헤비 메탈의 요소와 프로그레시브적 요소의 융합은 여전히 흥미진진하다. 복잡함의 정도는 이전 앨범에 비해 더 심해졌지만, 그것이 어려움을 동반하고 있지는 않다. 이 앨범에 프로그레시브 메탈적인 현기증나는 연주가 동반되어져 있지는 않다. 어두운 분위기와 다층적인 구성이 이 앨범의 틀을 이루고 있지만, 이는 통상적인 헤비 메탈의 범주에 머무르고 있다. 멜로디 라인은 파워 메탈과 같이 앨범의 전면에서 직접적으로 드러나고 있지는 않고, 은은하게 리프와 리듬에 섞여있는 것처럼 들린다. 이러한 요소로 이 밴드는 90년대의 파워 메탈 밴드들보단 80년대의 프로그레시브 메탈 밴드들과 좀더 가까워 보인다. 앨범 자체적으로 담백하게 들리는 경향이 있어서 처음 들으면 이 앨범을 심심하게 받아들일 수 있다. 하지만, 충분히 시간을 들여 ... as with the first album, this is a great Progressive & Power Metal album

druhé album "A Prelude to Sorrow" pokračuje v smere prvotiny, pričom je trošku priamočiarejšie a tvrdšie: štýlovo Power/Prog. Metal. Zmenili sa mierne bicie (nový bubeník Steve Bolognese skrz predčasnej smrti predošlého). Zároveň k melodickému spevu pribudli občasné výkriky. Album je opäť podarené.

데뷔작에 비교하면 좀 부족한 느낌이 들지만 이 밴드를 알게 해준 6번,9번 트랙같이 괜찮은 곡들이 꽤 있다. 전체를 통으로 듣기엔 다소 지루한 편이긴 하다.
