소위 모던 헤비니스씬이 2010년대 이후를 코어 음악과 Djent로 완전히 휩쓸면서, 90년대를 찬란하게 빛냈던 파워메탈과 고딕 계열에서 그때의 영광을 아직도 간직하고 있는 밴드는 그리 많지 않다. Paradise Lost 이후 수많은 고딕/둠 메탈 계열의 밴드가 명멸해온 가운데, Draconian의 이번 작품은 베테랑의 관록을 여실히 드러내는 앨범이 아닐 수 없다. 밴드는 야수의 그것과 같은 그로울링과 슬픈 여성 보컬의 조화라는 고딕메탈의 정석적인 문법을 그대로 유지하면서, 둔중하고 강렬한 일렉기타 사운드로 둠메탈의 요소를 적절하게 집어넣는 행위를 20년 가까이 해왔고, 이쯤이면 타 서브 장르의 거장들이 그렇듯 매너리즘에 빠진 것 같은 멜로디와 진행이 반복될 것 같지만 도무지 그런 느낌을 받을 수가 없다. 밴드가 긴 무명 생활을 거치고 좋은 평가를 받을 수 있는 전환점이 되었던 Arcane Rain Fell이 블랙메탈에 가까운 사운드와 Lisa Johansson 특유의, 어찌보면 Draconian 그 자체라고도 할 수 있는 애절한 보컬을 들려주었다면, Heike Langhans와 함께하는 후기작은 처연함과 분노가 함께 한다. 영지주의와 관련된 카사를 배치하여 반종교적(반기독교적) 테마를 활용해온 밴드의 컨셉 또한 탄탄하다. 초반부터 느린 템포로 청자를 휘어잡는 The Sacrif ... All played so perfectly. It doesn't excite me as much as some of their other albums, but I definitely love the band.

매우 수준 높은 고딕메탈을 들려주는 Dragonian. 이 앨범도 상당히 세련된 사운드를 들려주는 것만큼은 분명하지만, Draconian 최고의 앨범 Arcane Rain Fall에는 전혀 못 미치며, 무엇보다 꽤 지루함.

My favorite album of 2020. The underlying concept is so well crafted that it adds another dimension to the songs that are already great in instrumentation, vocals and structure

기대 이상의 수작을 내 주었다. 후기 명반이라고 불러도 손색이 없다. 특히 8, 10번 트랙은 초기 명곡들에 충분히 비견될 만한 킬링 트랙!
