Old Man's Child의 데뷔 앨범 Born of the Flickering은 블랙 메탈 세컨드 웨이브를 상징하는 작품 중 하나로 높은 평가를 누리고 있다. 지금에야 본작에서 보여주는 사운드가 하나의 전형으로 완연히 자리잡았지만, 처음 Galder가 활동할 때에는 나름 신선한 시도였다. Born of the Flickering은 원시적이면서도 세련된 사운드가 잘 녹아 있는 것이 특징으로 신디사이저와 어쿠스틱 기타의 사용이 청자에게 이색적으로 다가오면서, 색다른 풍미를 전달하고 있다. Born of the Flickering에 수록된 트랙들은 멜로디와 공격성 사이의 균형이 잘 맞춰져 있으며, 이러한 요소들은 앨범 전체에서 조화를 이루고 있다. Galder의 다양한 보컬링은 어쿠스틱 기타와 신디사이저 사이를 종횡으로 누비면서 앨범의 전반적인 분위기를 독특하게 형성하고 있다. 개인적으로 블랙 메탈에 입문하고 나서 오랜 시간이 흐른 뒤라 Born of the Flickering이 그리 신선하게 다가오지는 않는다. 위에서 언급했듯이 이 앨범이 나온지 이미 30년이 지났기 때문에 Old Man's Child가 당시 블랙 메탈 팬들이 받은 인상에 대한 반응이 썩 잘 와닿는 것은 아니다. 그러나 뛰어난 작품인지라 본작에 실린 멜로디나 공격적인 전개, 블랙 메탈 특유의 어두운 정서는 여전히 매력적으로 다가오고 있다.
