예전 같았으면 Revenge의 새 앨범이 날아오면 '오오오!'하면서 기쁘게 듣고 포스팅했을 것인데, 이것을 구했던 시점(거의 발매와 동시에 구했으니 2020년 6월 경?)에 있어서 지금까지 정말로 바쁘고 힘들게 살아왔기에 음악 자체도 많이 놓치고 있었다. 그래서 구해만 놓고 여태 잊고 있다가 이렇게 뒤늦게 플레이해보았다.
먼저 전작 Behold.Total.Rejection과 비교를 안할 수 없는데 이들의 비인간적이고 폭력적인, 순수한 분노와 광기는 5집 Behold.Total.Rejection에서 지저분하고 불명확한 프로듀싱으로 인해 더욱 더 청자를 고통으로 밀어 넣었었다. 하지만 이 6집 Strike.Smother.Dehumanize는 그보다 훨씬 뚜렷하고 깨끗한 프로듀싱으로 각 파트 (특히 베이스)에 있어서 이들의 혼란이 합쳐져서, 혹은 개별적으로 어떻게 끓어오르고 있는지를 훨씬 잘 나타내준다.
아울러 전매특허라 할 수 있는 이 불쾌한 브레이크와 미들템포의 전환에서 퍼지는 퍼지한 사운드의 냉혹함(+차이나 심벌 챙챙챙)은 20년이 지난 지금도 이들은 여전히 블랙/데스 계에서, 혹은 워메탈이란 서브장르 내에서 가장 독창적인 밴드임을 각인시켜준다.

I've found that there's not much war metal out there, but there's still a lot of good war metal. And this album really blew my mind. The chaotic fast parts and the dark mid-slow parts complement each other perfectly. The drumming is so astounding I could barely believe I was hearing it. I can't say enough good things about this one.

살짝 달달해진 사운드(믹싱의 위력?)이지만 여전히 강력한 전쟁금속 맛이 일품이다. 이보다 더 강력해질수 있을지는 모르겠지만 더욱더 빡센 다음앨범을 기대하며.

끊임없이 전쟁과 살육을 추구하던 블랙데스계의 또다른 미치광이의 여섯번째 풀렝스, 참 이들이기에 이런 사운드가 계속 유지될 수 있는거구나 싶었다. 초기작에 비해 심플하고 캐치할 부분이 많아진거 외에는 극단으로 치닫는 폭력성과 쇠가는 소리는 여전히 죽여준다. 앞으로도 꾸준히 음악 해줬으면..

이들의 한결같은 스타일을 거의 20년간 유지하는 것에 대해서는 아낌없이 찬사를 보낼만 하지만 솔직히 이제는 이들의 신보가 예전만큼 기대되지는 않는다는 게 내 솔직한 의견. 이들만의 잘못이 아니라 장르 특성상 필히 해결해야만하는 숙제인 듯 하다. 이런저런 블랙/데스를 들어보니 이 장르도 이제는 빡세기만한 것이 전부가 아님을 느낀 것 같다.
