영국 태생의 둠 메탈 밴드 Warning의 데뷔 앨범 The Strength to Dream은 깊고 서정적인 감성으로 가득 찬 작품이다. 이후 발표된 Watching from a Distance에 비해 둠 메탈 팬들 사이에서 언급되는 정도는 덜하지만, 밴드의 시작을 알 수 있는 자료가 되는 작품이다. 이 앨범은 극단적인 속도 변화나 과한 상식없이 단순하고 반복적인 리프를 중심으로 진행된다. 무겁고 느린 기타 리프와 둔중한, 드럼, 비통한 톤의 보컬이 조화를 이루며 몽환적인 분위기를 조성한다. 둠 메탈의 전형을 따르고 있으면서도, 본작은 고딕적인 서정성을 강조하고는 있는 것이 특징이다. 특히 핵심 멤버인 Patrick Walker의 보컬링은 이 앨범에서 중요한 위치를 점한다. 전통적인 메탈 보컬 스타일과 거리를 두면, 풍성한 감정을 담은 그의 목소리는 깊은 슬픔과 내면의 고통을 생생하게 전달한다. 그 목소리의 형태가 완전히 정제되어 있진 않지만, 순수하고 날 것 그대로의 감성에는 애절함이 서려있다. 후속작 Watching from a Distance에서 밴드는 좀더 원숙하고 세련된 매력을 발산하지만, 본작은 거친 원형 그대로의 매력을 잘 담아내고 있다.

Warning were just starting to break free of their boring Trad Doom shackles here. Patrick's voice is not perfected, yet he crafts some very impressive and power vocal lines dripping with emotion; ditto for the lyrics. The music, unfortunately, doesn't keep up. Usually, it is still stuck on boring Trad Doom tropes and not effective at evoking emotion. But, certainly, hints of their future greatness were on display...
