Tempel의 데뷔 앨범 On the Steps of the Temple을 들은 첫 감상은 블랙 메탈이 맞는가? 두 번째는 보컬은 어디갔지?였다. 첫 번째 질문은 앨범이 차차 귀에 익으면서 점차 해소되었다. Alcest 이상으로 실험적인 성격이 강한 이 밴드는 여러장르가 혼재된 양상의 음악을 들려주면서 꽤나 흥미진진한 면모를 보여주었다. 이런 장르에는 당연히 늘 보컬이 있어왔기 때문에 On the Steps of the Temple은 다소 당황스럽게 다가오기도 했지만, 이 앨범을 들었던 사람들의 의견을 같이한다. 굳이 이 앨범에 보컬이 필요하다는 생각이 들지않는다. 그동안 블랙 메탈 밴드에 소속된 보컬들이 많은 역할을 감당하면서 그들의 정서와 분위기를 표현하는데 중요한 역할을 담당했다지만, Tempel의 음악 세계에 보컬은 반드시 필수적인 요소가 아니라 할 것이다. 연주만으로도 블랙 메탈 특유의 암울한 사운드를 표현하는데 이 밴드는 별다른 어려움을 겪지 않은 듯한 양상을 보이고 있다. 이런 스타일은 블랙 메탈의 주류와는 괴리가 커서 익숙해지는데 청자는 어려움을 겪을 수 있지만, 실험성에 초점을 맞추는 리스너라면 이 앨범은 무척 흥미진진하게 다가올 것이다.
