일찍이 핀란드는 Skepticism이라는 거물 밴드를 낳은 바 있으며, 또한 Colosseum, Thergothon 등의 걸출한 밴드들을 배출했다. Shape of Despair 또한 이 밴드들과 어깨를 나란히 한 만한 팀이 아닌가 싶다. 그들은 데뷔 앨범부터 그들의 위상을 확정지었는데, Shades of... 는 퓨너럴 둠 메탈 씬을 대표하는 작품 중 하나로 알려져 있다. 본작은 반복적이고 느린 템포의 특성이 최면적이고 매혹적인 분위기를 만들어내고 있다. 흐릿하고 모호하게, 그리고 서서히 변하는 분위기가 청자에게 침울한 감정을 자아내고 있다. 남성 보컬과 여성 보컬의 조화가 이 앨범의 분위기를 더욱 풍부하게 만드는데 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. Shades of...의 감상은 만물이 움트기 시작하는 봄이나, 무더운 여름에 하는 것은 그리 어울리지 않을 것 같다. 우울하고 추운 겨울 밤에 아무도 없는 방에서 조용히 듣고 있으면 온몸이 에이는 듯한 한기와 함께 뿌리깊은 고독감을 만끽할 수 있다.
