Helstar는 해외 메탈 팬들 사이에서는 잘 알려진 밴드이지만, 국내에서는 인지도가 전무하다시피한 밴드이다. 이들은 American Power Metal의 전설로 높은 평가를 받고 있다. 이러한 고평가에 기대 이들의 데뷔 앨범을 들어봤지만, Burning Star는 별다른 감흥이 없었다. 이들의 데뷔 앨범은 파워 메탈은 고사하고, 그저그런 Heavy Metal 앨범일 뿐이었으며, 연주자체도 그다지 인상적이지 못했다. 그러던 차에 내가 이들의 진가를 깨닫게 된 것은 두 번째 앨범인 Remnants of War부터였다. 앨범 제작에 앞서 밴드는 한번 공중분해 상태가 된다. James Rivera와 Larry Barragan를 제외한 멤버들은 전부 새로운 얼굴들로 채워졌다. 이러한 대대적인 멤버교체는 밴드에게 이익이 되었다. 새로 들어온 멤버들은 미심쩍은 실력의 전 멤버들에 비해 기량면에서 훨씬 윗길에 있는 뮤지션들이어서 밴드의 발전에 있어서 도움이 되었다. 밴드의 데뷔 앨범을 들어보면 유난히 리듬 섹션이 빈약한 면모를 보이고 있음을 알 수 있다. 교체된 멤버들은 좀더 탄력적인 연주로 리듬 파트를 보강하면서, 전작에서만 해도 구태의연한 플레이에만 연연하던 Larry Barragan의 연주 폭도 넓어져서 좀더 풍성한 사운드를 낼 수 있게 되었다. Helstar upped their game from their relatively standard debut, this one faster and heavier. Overall just better stuff.
