음반 사모으는 사람들 중에서 베스트 앨범 좋아하는 사람이 있을까? 아마도 대부분은 싫어할 것이다. 개인적으로도 베스트 앨범은 사기가 꺼려진다. 설령 내가 좋아하는 곡들만 실려 있어도 구매의욕은 선뜻 생기지 않는다. 무언가 레코드사의 상혼에 놀아나는 것 같아 기분이 그리 좋지않다. 그런데 Sony에서 만들어내는 The Essential이라는 이름으로 묶은 베스트 앨범 시리즈는 그 나름의 구매욕구를 자극하는 무언가가 있다. 여기에는 Michael Jackson이나 Billy Joel, Madonna 같은 슈퍼 스타를 비롯해서 Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne 같이 특정 장르을 호령했던 음악적으로 높이 평가 받은 아티스트의 명곡들을 베스트 앨범 형식의 시리즈로 묶어냈다. 이 시리즈에는 Journey의 이름도 포함되어 있다. 상당히 알차게 구성된 이 앨범은 Journey 입문용으로 좋다고 생각된다. 특히 Disc 1은 70년대 말에서 80년대 중반까지 Journey의 전성기를 대표하는 명곡들로 가득 채워져 있다.
