Sirenia의 두 번째 앨범 An Elixir for Existence에서 더욱더 발전된 역량을 과시하고 있다. 본작에서 밴드의 음악정 방향과 분위기는 한층 진지하고 어두운 면으로 확장한 작품이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 전작 At Sixes and Sevens도 충분히 무게감 있는 작품이었지만, An Elixir for Existence는 앨범에서 다루고 있는 주요한 테마들, 이를테면 약물중독, 자살, 정신적 고통 등의 주제를 심도높게 다루면서 음악적 무게와 깊이를 더하고 있다. At Sixes and Sevens보다 나은 작품인지는 우열을 가릴 수 없지만, 확실히 본작이 고딕 메탈 고유의 본성인 고독하고 우울한 감정을 강렬하고 설득력있게 제시하고 있다는 데에 반론을 제기할 사람은 없으리라 생각된다. Morten Veland의 사납게 그르렁거리는 보컬링은 앨범의 중심에 있지만, 여성 보컬은 때로는 우아하게, 때로는 아련하게 들리는 목소리로 앨범 전체에서 장르 특유의 서정적인 무드를 조성하고 있다.
