Sepultura의 막스 카발레라가 Sepultura를 탈퇴한 뒤 조직한 밴드 Soulfly의 2번째 앨범으로 화려하다 못해 어지러울 정도의 막강한 게스트들이 이 앨범의 완성도를 높이는데 일조했다. 게스트들을 대략 살펴보면, slayer의 탐 아라야, Slipknot의 보컬인 코리 테일러, Deftones의 치노 모레노 등으로 스래쉬/Nu-Metal계의 거물들이 참여했다.
난 이 앨범이 브라질 토속적인 음을 들려준다 그러길래 처음에는 좀 거부감이 있었다. '그래도 막스인데..'하는 생각에 들어봤는데 '역시 막스!'라는 탄성이 절로 나왔다. 확실히 Sepultura의 전성기 시절의 원초적이면서도 식하게 밀어붙이는 사운드에는 못 미친다고 할 수 있지만, Sepultura가 워낙 뛰어났던 점을 떠올리면, 이 정도면 충분히 성공이라고 생각된다.
앨범을 플레잉 시키면 압도적인 박력으로 청자를 죽여놓는 첫 곡 Back To The Primitive가 흘러나온다. 그 다음곡은 대망의 Pain인데, 육중한 그루브감이 충만한 기타리프로 시작되는 이 곡은 인간의 저 깊이 숨어있는 파괴본능을 자극해 그 파괴본능을 표면적으로 분출하게 만드는데 개인적으로 Soulfly의 모든 곡들 중에서 가장 뛰어난 곡이라 생각된다. Slipknot의 코리 테일러와 같이 부른 JumpdafuckUp의 스래쉬 리프는 뭐든지 때려 부술것 같은 기세로 달려 ... See More

Groove Nu Metal with Tribal influence. Yeah, it's got a unique sound, but I just don't really enjoy anything about what they're doing here.

I think I like this one even more than their self-titled. There's just so much life in each song. I find the riffs energizing, and the passionate vocals are 100% genuine. There is constant swearing on this album, which was a rather childish and embarrassing aspect of the nu metal boom, but on this album all the swears just feel completely natural; I can't explain it.

good album from Soulfly, but I think Max Cavalera was better with Sepultura (Arise, Chaos A.D., etc.)

This album has many songs as leftovers, but "Back to the primitive" is a great hit for me

별의 별 게스트들을 불러 만든 잡탕밥같은 앨범(짬뽕같은 앨범이라고 칭하기엔 밋밋하기에) 시도는 좋았고 적어도 Back to the Primitive와 Corey가 피쳐링한 Jumpdafuckup은 들을만 하다.

예전 아마추어밴드에서 베이스를 칠때 이태원 클럽에서 Back to the Primitive를 연주하면 외국인관객들 반응이 엄청나서 우리도 정말 다 쏟아내듯 방방 뜨며 연주했던 기억이 난다. 그런데 솔직히 그 곡 이외에 이 앨범에서 딱히 기억나는 곡도 듣고싶은 곡도 없다.
