I’ll have to admit right off the bat, as someone who loves Gothic Metal, Type O Negative are pretty much antithesis to what I like to see in the genre. Full of humor and groove, the album is about as far removed from Doom as Gothic can get, and spits in the face of any melancholy normally associated with Gothic Metal. Most of the time, the band is just having fun, and as a result there is a lack of any genuine emotion to it.
There are at least plenty of moments of decent musical composition. The Title track stands out as quite a good song, their closest to Doom here, and a few other tracks make great use of keys and other sound effects to layer the music. Unfortunately, Peter is always throwing ridiculously stupid lyrics over the music, which ruins a good amount of it for me. His delivery in general is hammy in a bad way, like he’s always trying to parody something.
Impressive musically, disappointing altogether.

당대의 그런지 열풍에 편승하면서 고딕메탈을 덧씌운 앨범. 악기연주파트와 보컬스타일은 펄잼, 앨리스 인 체인스 등과 매우 유사하다. 그 대신 분위기는 끈적한 고딕메탈. 아쉬운 점은 1번트랙이 너무 특이해서(?) 많은 리스너들이 청취를 기피했을 것 같다는 점 정도랄까.

As usual for these guys, the guitar sounds are amazing, and the sense of humor is top notch. Peter Steele is on fire and the compositions just astound me. Also, toward the end of the album, they totally sound like Summoning before Summoning did.

My 8828th most played album. 2 good songs and noise. I played this 16 years ago gave it a bad grade listened again today and still not that good. I do like Christian woman and Black No. 1.

앨범 중간에 들어간 네개의 필러 트랙 (#1, #4, #8, #11)에 의미가 있다고 생각되지 않는다. 그럼에도 불구하고 대부분 나쁘지 않은 곡들로 채워져 있다. 하지만 최고의 곡은 재발매반에 추가된 Suspended In Dusk인 듯. 저 트랙 대신 네개의 필러트랙이 들어간 위의 트랙구성으로는 난 Gothic Metal 앨범이라고 부르기 어려울 것 같다.

당시 트렌디 했음.2와 3이 대표곡이고 6은 공포영화 '나는 네가 지난 여름에 한일을 알고있다' OST에 수록됨. 사진은 피터스틸 어머니와 이모라고 했는데 왜 이렇게 찍은건지...레즈는 아니라 했음. 그냥 허세인듯
