As long as human life has existed, it is reasonable to assume that torture and punishment has run parallel.

Torture seems to be an integral part of our nature.

You can't kill very large numbers of people, except in the name of virtue.

Crucifixion, death compounded by prolonged physical suffering. Victims of the cross could take days, or even weeks to die.

Stone them, stab them, break their bones.
