The Score - An Epic Journey는 정규앨범이라고 해야 할까? 번외 느낌이 강하게 드는지라 어딘가 컴플레이션 앨범에 해당되는 작품이 아닌가 싶다. 자신들이 이런 것도 할 수 있다는 자신감을 표출하는 게 아닌가 그런 생각이 들게 하고 있다. 다만 이 당시에 이렇게 맥락없이 새로운 시도를 했는지는 의문이다. 보통 이 정도로 생경한 시도는 밴드가 궤도에 오른 상태에서 이루어지는게 일반적이다. 그런데, 이 당시의 Epica는 그런 시도를 할 레벨의 밴드가 명백히 아니었다. Epica는 아직 신예 밴드에 지나지 않았다. Epica의 신예 밴드 티를 벗는 것은 The Divine Conspiracy였다. 이 앨범을 통해 밴드는 심포닉 메탈 그룹 중에서 가장 주목받는 팀으로 설 수 있었다. 하지만, 밴드가 본격적으로 현재의 정상급 밴드로 올라설 조짐을 보인 건 The Score 앨범이 아닌가도 싶다. 정규 앨범에 넣기엔 애매하지만, 이 앨범부터 밴드의 재능은 만개한 것으로 보인다. 또한 이전 앨범들과 확연히 차이가 나는 프로덕션은 밴드의 가치를 상승시켰다. The Score에서 선보인 웅장하고 밀도 높은 심포닉 사운드는 장르는 약간 다르지만, 이후 Epica가 후속 앨범들에서 어떤 모습을 보여줄지 드러내고 있다고해도 무방하다고 생각한다.
