전작 Creed of Iron에서 깊은 감명을 받은지라 이들의 후속작도 호기심에 들어봤다. 그런데 Memory and Destiny는 기대와 다소 어긋나 있었다. Creed of Iron을 개인적으로 아주 좋아했던 이유가 Graveland 특유의 메마른 정서와 살벌함 때문이었는데 본작은 어떠한 요소와도 거리가 있었다. Immortal Pride부터 조금씩 도입되던 심포닉한 사운드가 Memory and Destiny에 이르러서는 앨범의 전면을 뒤덮어 웅장함이 주가 되었다. 그러다보니 본작은 밴드의 전작의 을씨년스러운 분위기는 감퇴하였다. 이러한 부분이 무척 아쉽게 생각되는 바이지만 Rob Darken이라는 뮤지션의 역량이 쇠퇴한 것은 결코 아니었다. Memory and Destiny는 감상의 포인트는 옮겨졌지만, 문제적 인간 Rob Darken이 여전히 매력적인 음악을 만드는 장인이라는 사실을 증명해 주고 있다.
Memory and Destiny는 단지 외적인 모습만 달라진게 아니다. 앨범에서 다루고 있는 주제도 이전 작품들과는 차이를 두고 있다. Immortal Pride와 Creed of Iron가 다루는 주제는 비장한 제목에서부터 느껴지듯이 전쟁터에서 흘리는 피와 영광을 강조하고 있다. 반면에 Memory and Destiny에서는 사라진 도시 아틀란티스를 향해 항해하는 전사들의 모습을 다루고 있다. Graveland는 기존 작품들과 주제는 약간 달리 했지만 여전히 V ... See More
