좋아하는 밴드의 작품을 찾아 듣게 되면 종종 컴플레이션 성향의 커버 앨범들을 접하게 된다. 그런데 이런 작품들을 대하고보면 왜 이 밴드의 곡을 커버했을까? 하고 의문이 드는 경우가 무척 많다. 파워 메탈 밴드가 블루지한 고전 록을 커버하는 경우는 하나밖에 없다. 밴드를 구성하는 멤버가 듣고 영향을 받은 곡이라고 하는데, 정작 그 밴드를 좋아하는 사람 입장에서는 그리 썩 와닿지 않는 경우가 흔하다. 그렇기 때문에 어떤 의무감(?)에서 듣거나 아니면 그런 앨범은 없는 셈치고 패스하는 경우도 많다. Iced Earth의 고전 록 밴드에 대한 존경심을 담은 Tribute to the Gods 같은 작품이 바로 통상적으로 접하는 커버앨범에 속한다. 몇몇 곡들은 이 밴드가 어디서 영향을 받았는지 쉬이 알 수 있지만, 어떤 곡들은 머릿속에 절로 물음표가 들게 한다. 밴드가 커버한 Judas Priest의 Screaming for Vengeance나 Black Sabbath의 셀프 타이틀 곡, Iron Maiden의 Hallowed Be Thy Name 같은 경우는 당연히 고개를 주억거리게 한다. Alice Cooper의 경우는 살짝 갸우뚱하게 하지만, Kiss, AC/DC, Blue Öyster Cult는 커버의 준수함을 떠나서 이 밴드가 영향을 받았는지 의아하게 된다. 아마도 특별한 이유는 없을 것 같다. 단지 Jon Schaffer의 연배로 고려했을 때 초기 하드록, 글램록을 ... See More

트리뷰트 앨범으로 자신들의 색깔을 100% 담아서 리메이크했다. Kiss, Iron Maiden, AD/DC, Blue oyster cult, Judas priest, alice cooper, black sabbath의 곡들을 한두곡씩 리메이크 했는데 가장 마음에 드는것은 각 밴드의 유명한 노래들을 Iced earth의 순수한 사운드 그대로 들을수 있다는 점인데 이들의 표준화된 사운드 그 자체가 너무나 정갈하고 정교하고 깔끔하기 때문에 원곡이 훼손되지 않고 더 깔끔하게 다듬어진 느낌이다. 다만 아쉬운것은 어차피 리메이크 앨범이니 다른 밴드의 히트곡도 80분 꽉꽉 채워서 만들었으면 어땠을까 하는 점이다. Iced earth 팬이라면 즐겁게 청취할수 있는 커버 앨범이다.

자신들이 좋아하는 밴드 곡들 커버한 작품으로 대부분 원곡을 충실히 따르고 있습니다. 원곡을 능가한다고 생각한 트랙은 없었지만 Blue Oyster Cult 곡의 경우, 보컬도 연주도 쇳소리가 가미된게 멋지게 느껴졌습니다. 대체로 그냥 무난하게 재미있게 들을수 있었네요. 좋았던 점이라면 (애석하게도) Iced Earth의 오리지널 곡보다 더좋게 들렸던 트랙이 많았다는 것...
