Melodic Power Metal이 Progressive Metal화하는 현상은 대략 90년대 말에서 2천년대 초반을 시작으로 증가하기 시작했다. 덴마크 출신의 Manticora는 파워 메탈의 프로그레시브 메탈의 도입에 있어서 시기적으로 여타 밴드들에 비해 상당히 앞선 밴드였다. 이미 90년대 초에 나타난 브라질 출신의 명밴드 Angra에게서 프로그레시브 메탈의 터치를 발견할 수 있었지만, Angra는 프로그레시브 메탈화의 붐을 일으키지는 못했다. 본격적으로 이 바람이 분 것은 90년대 말에 접어들면서 멜로딕 파워 메탈이 음악적으로 한계에 몰리면서 시도되었다. Manticora가 활동을 시작하기 시작한 시점은 파워 메탈에 대한 위기감이 고조된 시기였다. 이러한 위기를 타파하기 위해서는 새로운 시도가 필요했다. Maticora는 이러한 시도를 감행한 밴드들의 대열에 빠르게 편승했다. 이들은 프로그레시브 메탈을 적절히 수용하여 훌륭한 데뷔 앨범을 발표했다. 그러나 이들의 첫 작품인 Roots of Eternity는 훌륭한 퀄리티에 비해 레코딩이 만족스럽지 못하다. 아마도 경제적 여건을 비롯한 제반 사정이 작품을 만드는데 영향을 미쳤으리라 생각된다. 악곡의 구성이나 연주력, 멜로디 라인은 높이 살만하지만, 프로덕션 부분에서 이 밴드의 장점을 상당부분 깎아 먹는다. 그래도 작 ...
