메이든의 첫 정규 풀랭스 앨범은 1980년에 나왔고 부르스 디킨슨은 1958년생이다.
메이든은 전성기의 힘과 속도를 잃은 지 오래다. 돌이킬 수 없는 사실이다.

이 돌이킬 수 없는 사실을 얼마나 감안하느냐에 따라 『Senjutsu』(2021)에 대한 평가가 갈린다.

좋게 말하자면,

메이든은 현재 상태를 잘 알고 할 수 없는 것은 하지 않고 할 수 있는 것을 잘했다.
가깝게는 『The Book of Souls』(2015)부터 멀게는 『A Matter of Life and Death』(2006)부터 메이든은 전성기의 힘과 속도를 잃은 헤비메탈 밴드가 살아남을 수 있는 방법을 시도했다고 볼 수도 있고, 그런 방향에서 본다면 전작과 이번 앨범은 하나의 완성형이라 할 수 있다.

힘과 속도를 통한 박진감보다는 긴 시간 묵직하게 쌓아올리는 서사와 구조, 여유롭고 다채로운 멜로디에 중점을 두는 스타일 말이다.
전작의 Empire Of The Clouds가 바로 그런 곡으로 호평을 받았다.

이번 앨범에는 Empire Of The Clouds만큼의 ‘결정적인 한방’은 없지만 마지막 10분여의 곡 3연타, Death of the Celts - The Parchment - Hell on Earth가 그에 준한다 할 수 있다.
특히 The Parchment가 최고다. 드라마틱한 전개와 전성기의 힘을 한 순간이나마 펼친 후 고요히 잦아드는 마무리는 찡하다.
위의 3곡 만큼은 아니지만 Senjutsu, Lost in a Lost World도 괜찮다.

이들에게 아직도 1980년대의 전설적인 업적인 『The Number Of The Beast』(1982)부터 『Seventh Son of a Seventh Son』(1988)까지의 힘과 속도, 그리고 작곡력까지 요구하며 그에 미치지 못하니 실망스럽다는 건 실로 잔인한 평가 아닐까.

그저 ‘헤비메탈 레전드’니 좋게 대접해야 한다는 게 아니다. 힘과 속도를 잃은 ‘헤비메탈’밴드가 어떻게 계속해서 ‘좋은 곡’을 만드는지에 대한 관점으로 보자면 이번 앨범은 여전히 훌륭하며, 이번에도 어김없이 유럽 각국의 차트 상위권에 위치하며 클래스를 증명했다. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senjutsu_%28album%29)

나쁘게 말하자면,

은퇴하는 게 낫다. 아니 진즉에 했어야 했다.
이정도로 힘과 속도를 잃은 헤비메탈 밴드가 아직까지도 활동 할 수 있는 건 순전히 과거의 전설적인 업적 때문이다.
앨범을 처음부터 끝까지 한 번에 듣기 어려울 정도로 불필요하게 길고 지루하다. 왜 이리 대곡에 집착하는지 모르겠다.

특히 The Time Machine, Darkest Hour는 지루함 그 자체다. 느리게 가는 시간 여행과 앨범에서 가장 지겹고 어두운 구간이란 의미에서 지은 제목이 아닐까 싶을 정도다.

도저히 ‘헤비메탈’에 기대하는 감정적 만족을 느끼긴 어렵다. 그걸 원한다면 메이든의 과거 앨범을 다시 듣거나 젊고 생생한 헤비메탈 그룹을 찾는 게 낫다.
반대의 경우도 마찬가지다. 서사, 구조, 멜로디를 통한 만족감을 원한다면 이 앨범 들을 시간에 말러의 교향곡을 듣는 게 훨씬 나은 선택이다.

요약하자면 ‘메이든이 아닌 밴드가 냈다면 놀라운 구성력이라 칭찬 받았을 앨범’과 ‘메이든 이름값 아니었으면 진즉에 지겹다고 던져버렸을 앨범’ 사이의 어딘가다.
물론 나는 전자다. 당장 은퇴기사가 나와도 이상하지 않을 노장이 선보인 분투기를 더 많은 이가 너그럽게 즐겨 주길 바라며 이만 줄인다.

Is Bettre With The Finel Frontier With 2010 The Book of Soul 2015 Make No Mistake This Is A Good Album But Too Long For Me But Is Good Album I Talking Abut The Book of Soul Anyone Who Loves Progressive Metal Is As Good As Me I Love This Album Lest Go Review The album is soft and relaxed to enjoy the top of the three guitarists of the band in a calm and stunning bass guitar of the notorious base surprisingly surprising me every time the legendary solidist Bruce Dickinson does a great job and the album was greatly absorbed but what we'll talk about the songs for a long time to know what I think of them even the album and technical in a good way then here's what I'm feeling on the songs so lest go.

Ok so I will approach this album by listing how I felt about individual songs. I adore Iron Maiden's classic albums, but it has been a while since I heard anything other than middling LPs from them. Which is a huge bummer.

Also sorry for lack of any cohesion beforehand, because I'm writing this to curb my urge to do anything and everything. If you have problems, please fill my med bottle. Thanks.

Album cover - so, Apple Music says "Eddie, in full samurai regalia was immediately appealing". Bollocks. It is just a poorly rendered 3D model of Eddie. As someone else said, this is some boomer wapanese shit.

1. Senjutsu - There are guitar melodies which are payoffs without any setup. From 5 minute mark and onward they are decent, but before that, those solos are real doozy. You cannot just slap a good melody on a song and call it a day, you know?

Also, this cut features boring drums and questionable guitar mix. Both of them are certainly signs of things to come.

2. Stratego - Starts off good, a galloping riff is ear-catching. However, the band's method to complement Bruce's less-than-stellar vocal is questionable at best, and asinine at worst. Silly, and poorly mixed guitar melodies. Insipid, and equally poorly mixed synth. Is it really hard to give additional flavor to synth?

3. The Writing on the Wall - Why Bruce's vocal is mixed like it is wrapped in layers of paper foil? I listened to this song with higher volume once more, but seems like it is indeed poorly mixed. His vocal isn't even that bad to the point where hiding it behind instrumentals is justified. This is something I should've pointed out in former songs, but it just stands out so much more in this kind of Iron Maiden style epic song. Guitar solo is really good, though.

4. Lost in a Lost World - Why is the acoustic guitar in intro part so poorly mixed? Seems like the only thing I'm bitching about is mixing, but it really is bad. For Pete's sake, I can hear clippings! It shouldn't be this audible. Drums are also ear-piercing. Guitar melodies really don't complement his vocals. A band of Iron Maiden's caliber should know that vocal and guitar playing the same note doesn't count as harmony, so it can sound jarring when used this frequently, right? Why are you guys doing this over and over again? Also the solo really reminds me of Dance of Death. Outro also reminds me of Dance of Death. I want to listen to Dance of Death. Or Lost in the World by Kanye West, because that one has a similar name to this. Also Bon Iver sample on that one really gives me life.

5. Days of Future Past - Maybe the best song on this album. Other than rather uninspired vocal melody in chorus or a rather janky segue into the final chorus, this is a whole banger and a half. The solo should've been longer.

6. The Time Machine - Why are those dull acoustic intro on almost every song? Cut the loss, start off the song with a strong riff. Iron Maiden is suffering from Metallica Syndrome. Also, another song that reminds me of Dance of Death. I'm drifting out of my attention.

7. Darkest Hour - Intro could've been impressive if guitars are mixed well. Guitars really sound like they're cramped into one Pringles box. It sounds like it could've been a real hitter if it is mixed to sound ethereal. Which is an argument that goes for a lot of guitar segments in this album. Also, this song too is a victim of poorly written chorus melody.

8. Death of the Celts - It's almost like every song on this wretched album has an interlude, a bad one at that. Does this kind of interlude adds anything to the context of a song? It's not really about my short attention span, I can listen to one 2 hour album in one sitting and go 'damn this is a masterpiece'. It is that those interludes lacks any material to grab my attention. Also the instrumental break is appealing at first, but it overstays its welcome and meanders too long before guitar solos come in. Songs up to this point do not give me any emotions which are comparable to my experience with Dance of Death.

I think I know where Iron Maiden is going with all those epic songs, but when the album consists of just epic songs wall-to-wall, it's just boring. And for the last time, those songs aren't even that good. I want to listen to Rime of the Ancient Mariner or Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.

9. The Parchment - A nice intro driven by bass (and bass is stronger than any other instrumentals on this album, mind you). Compositions, including relatively well-mixed synths and thunderous outro, are better than any other epic songs on this album. Also guitar solo acutally hits like a truck. Guitar & vocal melody going together actually works well on this song! Doesn't really justify this kind of length, though. Would've been a classic if it was around 7 minutes long. Certainly up there with Days of the Future Past.

10. Hell on Earth - Would've been much better if this was a short outro. Reflective vibe of the intro is nice, but again, it massively overstays its welcome. And again, the riff that opens up the song, in combination with galloping bass lines, is too reminiscent of Dance of Death. Furthermore, the sudden change of tempo and the instrumentation which connects the song into the instrumental break is awkward. Outro should've started way more explosive with the courtesy of better vocal takes, and given that this is an official outro for the entirety of the album, it should've been much more carefully written. Not just another generic calming instrumental.

2/10 - If Iron Maiden cannot write songs that are as compelling as they were in their prime, they should have at least kept their songs short, so that it at least sounds fresher and diverse.

기대를 적게 했다면 무난하게 들을만한 앨범이라 생각할 것이고 기대를 많이 했다면 꽤 실망감이 클 Iron Maiden의 2021년 앨범. 첫 번째 싱글인 The Writing on the Wall을 듣고 기대하지 않았다가 두 번재 싱글이었던 Stratego에서 Gallop(말발굽 박자, Hell on Earth 인트로에서도 나온다)이 나왔을 때 들을만 하겠다는 생각을 했었는데 정확했다.
잘 만들었다. 들을만 하다. Stratego, Days of Future Past는 잘만들었다는 느낌을 준다. 하지만 지루하다. 특히, Disc 2의 10분이 넘는 곡들은 억지스러운 면이 보였다(듣다가 자서 다시 들었다)
총평을 하자면 Iron Maiden이 Iron Maiden의 앨범을 냈을 뿐이라고 하고싶다. 특별하지 않다. Metallica 최신작보다 낫지만 몰입하게 만드는 곡들이 없어서 찾을 일이 많지는 않겠지만 추후에 다시 듣는다고 해도 높은 점수를 주기는 어려울 것 같다.

아이언 메이든의 완성.

전작 The Book of Soul을 들었을 땐, 'Empire Of The Clouds로 앨범을 도배하는 대신 일부러 방향을 틀어본 듯한 느낌' 이라고 리뷰를 썼었다. 이들은 그때 이미 브루스 성량 저하에 대한 해답을 찾았지만 이걸 앨범 전체에 적용시키지 않았다고. 그리고 Empire Of The Clouds의 확장판을 바란다고 썼었다.

그렇다면 이 앨범은? 이건 재결성 이후 최고의 명반이자, 아이언 메이든의 집대성인 동시에 새로운 시작이다. 이전에 보여준 모든 것을 한 장의 앨범에 녹여낸 동시에, '우린 이제부터야!!!'라고 포효하는 느낌마저 든다.

우선 세 곡의 대곡과, 그 전의 7곡을 좀 나눠서 봐야 하는데, 7곡 중 살짝 아쉬운 Lost in a Lost World만 빼고 나머지 6곡이 전부 명곡이다. 전체적으로 건반 사운드가 많이 깔려있는데, 정작 듣다 보면 Powerslave의 재림이라는 느낌이 강하다. 극대화된 서사미, 황량한 사막을 연상시키는 분위기가 앨범 전체에 깔려있다.

그리고 곡들을 세부적으로 뜯어보면 데뷔앨범 Iron Maiden은 물론이고, Peace of Mind, Dance of Death, 심지어는 Virtual XI(특히 The Angel and the Gambler)의 느낌까지 난다. 그러면서도 이들은 매너리즘에서 완벽하게 벗어났다. 모든 전작의 분위기가 다 나는데, '이거 XX에서 들어봤는데?' 싶은 멜로디가 전혀 없다.

더 놀라운 건 나머지 세 대곡이다. 이 곡들은 Empire Of The Clouds의 확장인 동시에 새로운 메이든의 시작을 알리는 명곡이다. 입신의 경지에 달한 리프 메이킹, 괜찮은 보컬 멜로디, 환상적인 솔로까지 뭐 하나 빠지는 게 없다. The Parchment에서는 막판에 달리기까지 한다.

이들은 이 앨범으로 7th Son of a 7th Son의 재현이라는 강박에서 벗어났다. 그리고 이제까지 보여준 메이든의 모든 것을 이 한 장에 녹여냈다. 더구나 이들이 찾은 답인 When the Wild Wind Blows, Empire Of The Clouds에서 한 발짝 더 나아가, 이 앨범에서부터 새로운 메이든이 시작되며 아직 보여줄 게 많다는 것을 증명했다. 묵직하고 서사적이며 환상성까지 느껴지는 이 앨범의 사운드는 메이든이 20년의 고민 끝에 완성한 해답이다.
