System of a Down were one of the first Metal bands I really got into, and as such they were a pretty influential act for me. Even at the time, I never worshipped them or anything, but I did find them to be pretty great with some absolutely stellar songs. As I’ve matured, I find myself listening to the self-titled debut all the way through for the first time in… God, maybe 10 years? And it’s really not aged well. It’s still got two fantastic songs on it, but there is sooo much filler. Not to mention, it gets substantially weaker near the end.
The album is lacking in just about every department except for creativity and uniqueness. Riffs are simple and forgettable, with few leads at all, mostly relying on standard rhythm guitarwork. System of a Down have an amazing rhythm section in both Shavo and Dolyman, each having a very unique style that get tons of focus. Except, here, they didn’t have that style yet. They just sounded like run of the mill rhythm musicians.
The album feels way too long, but it’s only 40 minutes. No doubt thanks to most of the 13 tracks being unmemorable, outstaying their welcome and meandering nowhere. Some of the lyrics are alright, but there’s also a lot of cryptic word-salad and goofiness (not that they ever outgrew that).
Overall, it’s just not a great record. It’s fine. But the years have not been kind to it in my ears. I feel like this one gets way too much credit just because of the band’s legacy and because it’s “ ... See More

가장 좋아하는 밴드 중 하나인 SOAD의 작품이지만 나에게 이 앨범하면 가장 먼저 떠오르는 단어는 '낯설음'이다.
처음봤을 때의 낯섦이 아닌, 원래는 이랬구나... 하는 낯섦. 그것도 그저 막연한 낯섦이 아닌, 이유가 뚜렷한 낯섦이다.
이렇게 추상적으로 말하면 와닿지 않을 수도 있으니, 이 앨범이 이후 앨범과는 어떤 점에서 낯설고, 어떤 점이 아쉬운지 세가지 정도 이유를 서술하려한다.
(물론 이전 작품들과 비교하는 것이 아니라 이후 작품들과 비교해서 까내린다는게 웃기게 보일 수도 있지만, 그래도 Toxicity를 비롯한 2집 이후의 작품들과의 비교가 아니라면,
'에스닉 풍의 독특한 뉴메탈 앨범임. 3번 트랙 추천.'
이 정도 분량의 코멘트 밖에 나올 것 같지가 않다!)
첫째로 다론의 보컬 비중이 매우 적다는 것이 가장 큰 이유일 듯 하다. 물론 SOAD의 메인 보컬은 세르이가 맞지만 SOAD의 팬이기 이전에 다론의 팬인 나로써는 이 앨범보다는 다른 앨범에 확실히 손이 많이 가는 느낌이 있다.
두번째로는 앨범이 주는 느낌을 들 수 있겠다. SOAD하면 가장 먼저 떠오르는 키워드는 익살스러움이 아닐까.
하지만 이 앨범은 다른 앨범들에 비해 익살스러움과는 거리가 꽤나 있어보인다.(가사적인 측면에서는 잘 모르겠지만.)

75-80. serj도 많이 언급되는 보컬이라서 사게 되었다. 나쁘지 않지만 확실한 내 취향이라고 하기 힘들 듯 하다.

debutové rovnomenné album "System of a Down" ponúka kombináciu Groove/Alt. Metal -u s občasnými Nu-Metal -ovými prvkami. Album ešte nie je také silné ako neskoršie albumy, ale predkladá pestrú zmes hudby s prevažne podarenými nápadmi a variabilným spevom, ktorý predvádza svoju melodickú stránku v kontraste s agresívnymi prvkami. Väčšina hudby je podarená, no nájde sa aj pár menej zaujímavých časti a väčšinou ma neoslovili texty.

아르메니아의 피가 흐르는 사나이들이 세상에 없던 음악을 들고 나왔습니다. 동유럽 감성과 중동 향신료를 뒤섞어서 뉴메탈의 포대에 넣고 뒤흔든 결과물은 1998년으로부터 시간이 꽤 흐른 지금 들어도 여전히 참신하고 독특합니다. 유쾌함과 익살, 요상함이 공존하는 세르지의 보이스와, 사막을 내달리는 탱크같은 다론의 막강한 기타톤, 그 멋진 합이 주는 매력!

System's best album. It sets the framework for their next albums. If you liked toxicity or any of their other albums, and don't mind a bit more crazy lyrics, you will like this album start to finish.

System Of A Down's first album is an astonishingly powerful release, containing lots of catchy-riffed songs.
