Fates Warning의 다섯 번째 앨범 Perfect Symmetry는 Fates Warning이 프로그레시브 메탈의 경계를 확장하며 더욱 섬세하고 실험적인 방향으로 나아간 앨범이다. 이전 앨범 No Exit보다 훨씬 더 복잡한 곡 구조와 다채로운 템포 변화가 특징이다. Jim Matheos의 기타 리프와 Mark Zonder의 테크니컬한 드러밍이 여전히 밴드의 핵심을 이루지만 앨범에서 청자에게 들려주는 사운드는 더 실험적이고 폭넓은 음악을 들려준다. Perfect Symmetry는 80년대 헤비 메탈의 트렌드와 그들 고유의 실험적인 성향을 이상적으로 엮어냈다. Most people consider “Awaken the Guardian” to be Fates Warning’s shining moment, but the album that outshone everything else by miles to me is “Perfect Symmetry.”
Perfect Symmetry is the band’s transition from a fantastical, proggy almost-Power Metal band into a full fledged modern Progressive Metal band, and one of the first albums ever to conceptualize this sound. Gone are the tales of high fantasy and abandoned are the speedy and uplifting metal epics that iconized their earlier sound. Here, they have traded their swords and steeds in acceptance of the reality that the world is a cold, unfriendly place that eats dreamers alive. They have become part of a machine of finely tuned skill and technicality – here the whole band play incredibly complex parts, alone but in unison, creating a cacophony of different melodies and rhythms that never play against each other.
One mistake you could make in reading that is to think they have become technical cogs incapable of producing melodies of beautiful passion. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Vocalist Ray Alder commands his voice like an instrument, but never shies away from simply crying out the sorrows of being smothered in the constraints of modern society. The lyrics across the board sound like those of a man who dreamed of grandeur as a child, but had those dreams quashed by reality. 이게 바로 20세기 프로그레시브메탈이며 이후 프로그메탈밴드들에게 길을 제시한 아주 대단한 메탈앨범이라 생각이 든다

Despite the fact that Fates Warning release one quality album after another with iron regularity, their fame is quite small (compared to, for example Dream Theater). They definitely deserve more attention.

1세대와 2세대 프로그레시브를 연결하는 가교. 힘보다 정교함을 강조한 리프 위에 얹어진 케빈 무어의 키보드 라인의 조화가 인상적이며, 최소한의 밴드 사운드로 보여줄 수 있는 연주의 극대화로 완성된, 페이츠 워닝의 저력이 유감 없이 표출되는 작품입니다. 그 연주력이 잘 묻어나오는 5번 트랙이 베스트.
