프로그레시브 메탈하면 한 밴드가 자연스레 떠오른다. 바로 Dream Theater이다. 수많은 밴드들이 있는 가운데서도 프로그레시브 메탈 밴드하면 Dream Theater를 제외한다면, 할 얘기가 반도 되지 않을 것이다. 그만큼 이들이 프로그레시브 메탈씬에 남긴 족적은 거대한 것이었다. 헤아릴 수 없을 정도로 많은 밴드들이 Dream Theater의 우산 아래 몰려있지만, 몇몇 밴드들은 그 영향권 밖에서 활동하기도 한다. 폴란드 프로그레시브 메탈 밴드인 Riverside는 Dream Theater와 상당히 먼 거리에 있는 밴드이다. 이들은 Dream Theater보다도 더 거슬러 올라가 Pink Floyd와 같은 70년대 프로그래시브 록 밴드들과 오히려 지근거리에 있다. 이들의 데뷔 앨범에 수록된 The Same River를 들어보면 Dream Theater 특유의 드라마틱한 구성미와 서정성과는 상당히 먼 거리에 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 이들은 점층적으로 멜로디를 층층이 쌓아가는 방법론을 도입하여 여타의 밴드들과는 다른 면모를 보이고 있다. 그러다보니 리드미컬한 전개를 좋아하는 리스너라면 본작에서 충분한 재미를 보지 못할 듯하다. 그러나 이렇게 극적인 전개보다는 유유한 흘러가는 이들의 사운드를 즐기는 리스너라면, 이만큼 재밌는 작품도 드물 것이다.
