Samael은 스위스출신의 Black Metal 밴드로 1987년 결성이후 다섯 번째 앨범인 Passage 이다. 보컬과 기타의 Vorphalack, 키보드와 프로그래밍을 맡는 Xy가 주축으로, 본작 Passage에서는 Xy가 작곡을 Vorphalack이 작사를 전담하였다. 원초적인 기타리프를 바탕으로 서사적으로 펼쳐지는 스트링사운드는 곡에 윤기를 불어넣으며 드라마틱한 자태를 뽐내고 있다. 미들템포의 장대한 사운드로 일관하고 있어 우주적인 분위기가 짙게 풍기며 초기 블랙의 영세성은 찾아볼 수 없다. 두 번째 앨범부터 함께한 Century Media의 명인, Waldemar Sorychta가 역시 프로듀싱을 맡고 있다.

Amazing album! This is how you do Industrial Metal right. Plenty of Sympho Black keys and spacey atmospheres, melodic leads, great rhythm... It's got it all.

I liked Solar Soul slightly more as it has a higher ratio of top-tier songs, although Passage also has tons of 'hell yeah' moments.

장르를 규정하기 힘든 음악을 하는 Samael. 이 앨범은 Symphonic Industrial이라 부를 수 있을 듯. 상당히 매력적인 리프를 들려줌. 개인적으로 크게 취향은 아니지만 잘 만든 명반임에는 분명.

전작과 다르게 전자음이 짙게 배어나오고 줄곧 빡세기만 하던 음악도 약간 순화되었다. 개인적으로는 이 쪽이 더 낫다고 생각한다. 특히 Moonskin의 아름다운 피아노 선율은 그 어떤 메탈 발라드에도 뒤지지 않는다.

96년이 아니라 2016년 올해 발매된 앨범이라고 해도 믿을 정도로 세련되고 현대적인 앨범이다. 인더스트리얼을 섞은 신비하고 웅장한 느낌이 여타 90년대 블랙 계열 앨범들과는 상당한 차이와 독특한 개성을 갖게 해준다.
