Darkthrone의 Hate Them을 밴드의 초기작들과 비교한다면 상당히 애매한 위치에 있는 작품이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 이 앨범에는 밴드의 고민이 묻어나고 있다. 전통적인 블랙 메탈 스타일을 유지하려는 욕심과 동시에 변화를 추구하고 싶다는 생각이 낳은 참사가 이 앨범이라고 생각한다. Hate Them은 초기작들의 극단적으로 로우한 사운드를 벗어나 보다 선명한 프로덕션 아래 제작되었지만, 그 결과물이란 그저 어정쩡할 뿐이다. 무엇보다도 심각한 부분은 기타가 초기의 차가운 느낌을 잃고 심하게 둔탁하게 들린다는 점이다. 블랙 메탈 특유의 원초적인 매력은 이 앨범에서 거세되었으며, 그 결과 Hate Them은 2류 펑크 앨범처럼 들린다. Nocturno Culto의 초기의 초기작에서 보여준 음산한 목소리와는 비교할 수 없을 정도로 밋밋한 목소리를 들려준다. 이는 앨범의 수록곡들과 좋지 않은 쪽으로 시너지를 이루어 Hate Them을 더욱더 평범하게 들린다. 초기 블랙 메탈의 본질적인 요소의 상당부분이 희석된 이 앨범이 좋은 평가를 받을 만한 이유는 없어보인다.

I love the crispy Black Metal sound that's sometimes even punkish. This phase of Darkthrone is something that I really like. Rust and Striving For A Piece Of Lucifer are really good tracks.

초기작에 비하면 떨어지지만 듣기 나쁘지 않았다. 이 앨범 나름대로의 사악함이 묻어나있다. Det svartner na가 앨범 내에서 가장 좋았다.
