사실 Mastodon의 음악을 정통 헤비메탈의 세부 장르로 구분하기는 힘들 수도 있는 것이 엄연한 사실이다. 그것은 바로 이들이 하는 음악의 뿌리를 단 한 장르에서만 찾는다는 것이 상당히 힘들기 때문이다. 재즈에 무지한 사람이 들어도 딱 알 수 있는 드러머의 재즈적인 감각과 소위 얼터너티브 메탈로 일컬어지는 21세기 새로운 메탈 주류의 색이 강하게 나타나기도 한다. 그리고 그런 감성을 담아내는 동시에 슬러지의 끈적함과 복잡한 프로그레시브적인 곡 구성력도 쉽게 버무려서 한 앨범에 담아내는데 그것이 너무나 자연스럽게 쉽게 들려서 왜 Mastodon 같은 밴드들이 많이 존재하지 않는지 의문점을 품게 되기도 한다.
근데 막상 생각하고 들어보면 왜 이런 밴드가 많이 존재하기 않는지에 대한 해답들 쉽게 찾아 볼 수 있다. 일단 이들의 음악은 상상을 초월하고 독창적이고 복잡하다. 물론 복잡한 음악이 최고는 아니지만 그런 복잡함을 쉽게 들리게 하는 것도 능력이라면 아주 뛰어난 능력이다. 때로는 익스트림 밴드 다운 살인적이고 파괴적인 연주를 들려주다가도 Opeth와 같이 능숙하게 어쿠스틱 파트로 전환하는 모습을 보면 이들을 단순히 Extreme Progressive Metal이라는 범주안에 가둬두기는 아쉬운 것이 사실이다.

Mastodon급의 밴드는 다시 나오기 힘들겠구나, 생각을 하게 만든 앨범.
듣다 보면 곡에 빠져들어 정신없이 처음부터 끝까지 듣기만 하게 되는 몇 안 되는 앨범이다. 슬럿지 특유의 헤비함과 프로그레시브 메탈을 아주 잘 섞었다.

Mastodon의 음악은 그 특유 정체성이 있다. 슬럿지라는 비주류사운드에 이런 작품을 만들었다는 건 역사에 기록할 만한 일이다.
