지금까지 Overkill의 앨범들은 Under the Influence이후의 작품들만 들어봤었다. 이 앨범부터 Thrash Metal 밴드로서의 진면목을 보여주었다는 평가가 지배적이었기 때문에 언제나 들었던 Overkill의 작품은 Under the Influence 이후부터였다. 그러다가 외국 메탈 사이트를 돌아다니던 도중에 Overkill의 데뷔 앨범에 대한 찬사가 담긴 외국 팬의 절절한 리뷰를 읽고 나서야 Feel the Fire를 찾아 듣게 되었다. Overkill이 데뷔 앨범을 발표할 시에만 해도 이 밴드가 아직 완연한 스래쉬 메탈 밴드가 아니었던 것은 확실하다. 정확히 어떤 장르에 속한다고 보기는 어렵지만, Feel the Fire에서 보이고 있는 Overkill의 모습은 Heavy Metal과 스래쉬 메탈 밴드의 사이에 있었다고 볼 수 있다. 여기에 70년대의 유산이었던 Punk Rock이 가미되어 있어 Feel the Fire에서는 복잡한 양상이 엿보인다. 다만 내용물 자체는 이미 Overkill답게 훌륭히 채워져있다. 데뷔 앨범이라 별로 들을 것은 없을 거라고 지레짐작하고 있었는데, 밴드의 시작을 알리는 Raise the Dead와 Rotten to the Core는 두말할 것 없이 Overkill의 클래스를 증명하는 곡들이다. 아직 스래쉬 메탈의 모습을 다 보이고 있지는 않지만, 데뷔 당시의 Overkill도 훌륭하기 그지없다. 그야말로 풋내난다는 표현이 적합한 음악을 들려줍니다. 엉망진창에 지리멸렬한 사운드였다면 풋내는 커녕 뭐라 몇마디 늘어놓기도 애매한데, 이건 심상치않습니다. 아마추어 느낌이 분명히 산재해 있어도, 끊임없는 리프들과 긴장감 조성의 실력이 만만치가 않습니다. 그래서 어설픈 풋내라기보다는 될성부른 떡잎의 싱그럽고 활기 넘치는 풋내로 다가옵니다.

I want to say it's generic Thrash, but that sounds like a bad thing. In any case, it's very standard, high quality Thrash metal.
