자신들이 만든 앨범에서 하나의 장르가 나왔을 정도로 Paradise Lost라는 이름이 Gothic Metal씬에서 가지고 있는 의의는 결코 작지 않다. 그러나 이들은 자신들이 만든 굴레를 벗어나 90년대 중반에 이르면 상당히 다른 밴드로 변모해 버린다. 95년 Draconian Times가 완성될 즈음에 기존의 고딕 메탈 팬들에게 Pop Gothic라는 말을 들을 만큼 이들의 변신은 충격적이었다. 그리고 이러한 변화는 이윽고 고딕 메탈씬에서 일종의 트렌드가 되어버렸다. 다수의 밴드들이 Paradise Lost를 뒤를 따르듯이 뉴웨이브 혹은 심포닉 메탈 밴드로 빠르게 전환되었다. 이들이 얼마나 빠르게 시대의 변화에 능동적으로 대처했는지 알 수 있다. 엄격한 고딕 주의자는 이들의 변화에 나오는 작품마다 혹평으로 일관했지만, Paradise Lost가 몰락하는 일은 벌어지지 않았다. 이들의 변화속에 담겨있는 고딕적인 우울한 정서는 기존 팬들조차도 설득당할 정도로 매력이 있었다. 이들의 뉴웨이브화가 거의 완성에 접어들었던 Draconian Times에 이어 발표된 One Second는 기존 노선을 그대로 고수했다. Paradise Lost begin diluting their sound with less Metal influence. Doom is totally gone here. Some catchy tracks for sure, but it's heading in the wrong direction.

이 앨범부터 기계음을 섞기 시작하면서 듣는 내 표정은 자켓의 할머니가 되었다. 크래쉬가 인더스트리얼 시작하면서 마음에서 멀어지듯, 어설픈 기계음은.. 안하던 밴드는 쓰면 안된다.

The sounds of this album filled all the sky above me with minty cool freshness. I thought I was going to like this one, but I straight up love it.
