노르웨이 심포닉 블랙 메탈 씬에서 Dimmu Borgir와 더불어 중요한 밴드로 손꼽히는 Old Man’s Child는 창립 멤버이자 중심 인물인 Galder의 주도로 특유의 멜로딕하면서도 공격적인 사운드를 구축했다. 그들의 두 번째 정규 앨범 The Pagan Prosperity는 밴드의 스타일을 본격적으로 정립한 작품으로, 웅장한 멜로디와 특유의 폭력적인 분위기가 돋보이는 앨범이다. Galder의 기타 리프는 공격적이면서도 상당히 정교하며, 곳곳에서 들리는 키보드 멜로디는 음울한 분위기를 배가시키고 있다. 올드스쿨 블랙 메탈의 원초적인 에너지를 유지하면서도, Dimmu Borgir처럼 극적인 심포닉 요소를 적극 활용하지 않는 점에서 차별점을 보인다. 대신, 멜로딕 데스 메탈에 가까운 선율적인 접근이 돋보인다는 점에서 특이하게 생각된다. 특유의 멜로디 라인 탓에 올드 스쿨 신봉자들에게 질타 당하기도 하지만, 이런 요소가 Old Man’s Child의 매력이 아니고 무엇이겠는가. 여타 밴드들과의 이러한 방법론 상의 차이는 후속 앨범에서 더욱더 부각된다.
