Fates Warning의 다섯 번째 앨범 Perfect Symmetry는 Fates Warning이 프로그레시브 메탈의 경계를 확장하며 더욱 섬세하고 실험적인 방향으로 나아간 앨범이다. 이전 앨범 No Exit보다 훨씬 더 복잡한 곡 구조와 다채로운 템포 변화가 특징이다. Jim Matheos의 기타 리프와 Mark Zonder의 테크니컬한 드러밍이 여전히 밴드의 핵심을 이루지만 앨범에서 청자에게 들려주는 사운드는 더 실험적이고 폭넓은 음악을 들려준다. Perfect Symmetry는 80년대 헤비 메탈의 트렌드와 그들 고유의 실험적인 성향을 이상적으로 엮어냈다. Ray Alder의 감성적인 보컬은 불안정하고, 긴장감 넘치는 전개 속에서 앨범의 복잡한 감정선을 잘 살려내어 보컬 교체에 따른 팬들의 우려를 불식시키고 있다. 현재까지도 프로그레시브 메탈 씬에서 가장 비중을 차지하고 있는 Dream Theater류의 프로그레시브 메탈과는 궤를 달리하고 있지만, Perfect Symmetry는 감성적인 깊이가 있는 작품이다. 그들의 초기작들, The Spectre Within이나 Awaken the Guardian에 비해 덜 알려져 있지만, 이 앨범에 담긴 당시 Fates Warning의 내공은 예사롭지 않다. 컬트 메탈 밴드의 작품으로서 Perfect Symmetry는 비록 대중적인 인기를 획득하는 데에는 이르지 못했지만, 이 앨범은 이후 프로그레시브 메탈의 발전을 이끄는 기폭제 역할을 한 작품으로 팬들 뿐만 아니라 이후 프로그레시브 메탈을 이끌어갈 후배 밴드들에게 강렬한 인상을 남긴 작품으로 기억되고 있다.
