노르웨이를 대표하는 Black Metal 밴드 Immortal은 두 번째 작품 Pure Holocaust를 통해 고유의 스타일을 완전히 정립했다. 후속작 Battles in the North는 전작에서 완성된 노선을 그대로 이어받은 작품으로 다재다능한 Abbath의 출중한 역량이 완벽하게 발휘된 작품이다. 눈폭풍이 사납게 휘몰아치는 듯한 사나운 연주에 기반한 이 앨범은 Immortal의 초기 명반으로 꼽히는 수작이다. 이 밴드의 모든 것을 대변하는 Abbath의 극도로 사악한 보이스는 그들의 세 번째 앨범 Battles in the North에서도 전작에 이어 그대로 반영되고 있다. 본작에서 팔방미인인 Abbath는 보컬 뿐만 아니라 베이스와 드럼도 맡아서 하고 있는데, 그의 실력은 일류라고 해도 손색이 없는 수준이다. 숨막히도록 몰아쳐대는 그의 드러밍과 베이스, Demonaz의 날카로운 기타 연주는 Abbath가 어떤 블랙 메탈을 지향하는지 잘 보여주고 있다. 눈사태를 불러일으키는 듯한 살벌한 사운드 속에서 느껴지는 차가운 공포는 Immortal 고유의 아이덴티티다. 전작인 Pure Holocaust에서도 잘 나타나고 있지만, Battles in the North는 여전히 거칠고 투박하지만 좀더 세련된 맛을 지니고 있다.

훌륭한 블랙메틀 앨범.
6곡 하나하나가 포스를 지니고 있음.
변화무쌍하고 빠른 곡전개가 앨범의 주를 이루고 있으며, 빠르게 진행되다가도 순간 조용하게 잠잠하게 있는 등 재미있는 구조로 되어있다. 곡 하나하나가 꽤나 길지만 이런 리프의 변화에 집중하여 듣고있으면 8분이고 6분... Read More

Wow! I know I’m in a crazy minority here, but I actually thought “Blizzard Beasts” was going to end up my favorite Immortal album. The way Immortal integrated twisted Death Metal riffs and more varied drumming into their wintry 2nd wave Black Metal formula worked very well for me. I was expecting a return to regular Black Metal with this album.
