슬러지 메탈이라고 하면 미국 남부 특유의 지릿한 내음이 생각난다. 토속적인 분위기 물씬 나는 진한 블루지한 그런 음악이 떠오르는데, 개인적으로 이런 스타일의 음악과 프로그레시브 메탈의 복잡다단한 전개와 잘 어울릴까 싶다. 이 분야에서 가장 유명한 밴드인 Mastodon을 아는 사람이라면 이런 우려 따위는 안하겠지만, 개인적으론 Mastodon의 앨범 한 장 들어본적 없는지라 어울리지 않을 것 같다는 생각을 갖고 있었다. 그러나 막상 Baroness의 데뷔 앨범인 Red Album을 들어보니 슬러지 메탈과 프로그레시브 메탈의 조화에 대한 우려는 명백히 개인적인 편견으로 드러났다. 프로그레시브 메탈 풍의 테크니컬한 연주는 비교적 느슨하게 진행되고, 그 위에 슬러지 메탈 특유의 남부적인 정취가 적절히 묻어나고 있다. 본작은 자연스러운 템포 전환과 함께 리듬 섹션의 변화, 그리고 탄력적인 남부풍의 기타 리프로 앨범을 감상하는 청자에게 쉴새없이 재미를 주고 있다. 슬러지 메탈은 기존에 그리 많이 접해보지 않은지라 생소한 편이었는데, Baroness의 Red Album은 생각보다 편안하게 다가온다.

아무리 프록이라도 이건 정말 아닌 것 같다... 다른 분들의 지적과는 달리 보컬은 괜찮다고 생각하지만 도디체 어디서 감상 포인트를 찾아야 할지를 모르겠다.

Why does some people hate Sludge metal? I guess it's because they have a bias that Sludge is basically a slowed version of other genre. If you think so, you gotta have this. Even you fasten the tempo, Baroness's music will be nothing like the others.

A very well-made sludge album with a bit of progressiveness. Listening to how each song develops through time was a really interesting experience.

마스토돈의 맛을 느끼기 위해 선택한 이들이지만 그런 날 어리석게 만들었다. 마스토돈과는 다른 느낌의 수작 프로그레시브 슬럿지 메탈 앨범.
