Helstar는 80년대를 수놓은 가장 걸출한 아메리칸 파워 메탈 밴드였다. Remnants of War, A Distant Thunder, 그리고 Nosferatu는 USPM을 대표하는 명반으로 현재까지 고평가받고 있다. 이 앨범들에서 Helstar는 그들 만의 테크니컬하면서도 강렬한 사운드를 만들면서 그들의 작지만 견고한 아성을 구축했다. 그들의 2007년 작품 Sins of the Past는 과거를 그리워하는 회고적인 작품인데, 기존 명곡들을 새로운 멤버들과 현대적인 프로듀싱을 통해 80년대의 영광을 되살리려는 시도였지만, 그 시절 특유의 날 선 에너지와 비교하면 아무래도 미진하기 짝이 없다. 밴드가 여전히 뛰어난 실력을 유지하고 있는 것은 확인되었지만, 수록곡들은 원곡의 거친 에너지와 생동감을 상실했다. Helstar의 매력은 날 것의 프로듀싱과 거침없는 속주, James Rivera의 목소리에서 나왔는데, 본작은 무겁고 정교한 사운드를 강조하면서 당시의 불완전함에서 나오는 매력이 희석된 감이 있다. 세련된 프로듀싱은 과거의 매력을 감소시키고 말았다. Sins of the Past는 추억을 되새기기에는 좋은 앨범이 될 수는 있지만, 80년대에 밴드만이 지녔던 야성과 불완전함에서 나오는 매력이 거세되면서 별다른 반응을 얻는데 실패하고 만다.
