Skepticism은 Thergothon과 Funeral의 뒤를 이어 Doom Metal씬을 탄탄하게 다진 밴드이다. Funeral이나 Skepticism 같은 초기 둠 메탈 밴드들의 작품들은 하나같이 청취 난이도가 높은 편이다. 2천년대 이후에 나타난 둠 메탈 밴드들의 앨범들이 비교적 듣기 쉬운 작품인 반면 초기부터 이 마이너한 장르를 지켜온 붙박이 밴드들은 쉽게 듣기 어려운 면이 많다. 대신에 이런 초창기 밴드들의 강점은 장르를 살아남게 한 특유의 분위기를 제대로 느낄 수 있게 해 준다. Skepticism은 그러한 분위기를 제대로 살려낸 고참 밴드 중 하나이다. 둠 메탈에 누가 Funeral이라는 단어를 갖다 붙였는지 모르겠지만, 개인적으로 아주 잘 붙였다고 생각한다. Skepticism은 그들의 데뷔 앨범 Stormcrowfleet에서 제대로 장례식의 무거운 분위기를 포착하고 있다. 장례 절차에 맞춰 진행되는 듯한 암울한 코드의 진행은 시종일관 리스너의 마음을 무겁게 짓누른다. Stormcrowfleet에서 나타나는 깊은 슬픔과 절망이 묻어나는 분위기는 둠 메탈의 본질이 무엇인지를 잘 보여 주고 있다. 장르 초기의, 날 것 그대로의 둠 메탈을 듣고 싶은 리스너라면 Skepticism의 Stormcrowfleet 꼭 들어봐야 할 작품이다.
