Riverside의 Rapid Eye Movement는 2007년에 발매된 네 번째 스튜디오 앨범으로, 팬들과 평론가들 사이에서 종종 아쉬움을 남기는 작품으로 여겨지고 있다. Second Life Syndrome과 Anno Domini High Definition이라는 두 강력한 앨범 사이에 위치한 이 앨범은, 전작들의 대담한 혁신과 후속작의 강렬한 에너지와 비교할 때 다소 부족하다는 인상을 준다. 앨범의 전반적인 스타일은 여전히 Riverside 특유의 어두운 프로그레시브 록 사운드를 유지하지만, 어딘가 듣는 재미는 덜하다. Second Life Syndrome에서 보여준 복잡하고 심도 있는 구조나 감정적으로 격렬한 전개에 비해, Rapid Eye Movement는 그만큼의 강렬함이나 감동을 전하지는 못하고 있다. 대신, 앨범은 다소 느긋하고 반복적인 요소가 강조되어, 가끔은 집중을 흐리게하는 구석이 있다. 그 결과 이전 앨범의 감동이나 인상적인 변화를 기대했던 이들이 Rapid Eye Movement를 듣게 되면 다소 평이하게 느껴질 수 있다. 혹평 받을 퀄리티는 아니지만, 앞뒤 앨범들에 비해 조금 더 부족하고 미진한 느낌을 주는 것은 부인할 수 없다.

A good album, kind of in the same vein as Opeth's Damnation, which I recently listened to and gave 75/100, although Opeth's work has some great moments. For this one I choose 85/100 first, but when I listen again I tought that 90/100 would be a fair number. The sound reminds me of an 80's prog vibe at times. Great work.
