Brave Murder Day 이후로 Katatonia는 자신들의 음악에 끊임없이 변화를 감행했다. 그들은 무거우면서도 우울한 자신들의 음악세계에 지속적으로 실험을 가했다. 그러나 Katatonia가 시도한 변화는 초기 그들의 음악에 호의를 표했던 리스너가 바라던 방향과는 동떨어져 있었다. 초기 이들이 지향했던 Doom/Gothic Metal과는 매 작품이 발표될 때마다 서서히 멀어져갔다. 대신에 모던한 멜로디의, 듣기 쉬운 음악쪽으로 밴드의 방향성은 점차 가닥이 잡혀 나갔다. 변화를 추구하는 동안 Katatonia의 초기 팬들은 많이 떨어져 나갔지만, 밴드는 조금도 개의치 않았다. 여기에는 자신들 만의 음악을 하겠다는 밴드의 고집도 일정부분 작용했겠지만, 변화의 과정에서 조우한 새로운 팬들의 존재야말로 Katatonia가 자신들의 음악을 하는 데에 더 많은 힘이 되어주었을 것으로 생각된다. 밴드의 이러한 변화는 The Great Cold Distance에 이르러서야 일단락되었다. 이후의 작품들이 좀더 세련된 멜로디를 지니고 있지만, Katatonia의 현재의 양태는 본작에서 거의 완성을 보이고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 본격적으로 지금의 Katatonia의 음악이 정립되기 시작한시기. 솔직히 이들의 최고 히트곡 My Twin말고는 별볼일 없는 앨범이라고 생각한다. 차라리 다음 앨범이 전체적으로 완성도는 더 높은듯

Even better than I remembered it. The melodies make me melt, and the drumming kept me enthralled.

A very gloomy and beautiful experience. The songs are either really good or kinda boring. Katatonia writes really good melodic lines though.
