Edge of Sanity의 네 번째 앨범 Purgatory Afterglow를 처음 들었을 때 든 느낌은 Crimson과 먼 거리에 있지 않다는 점이다. 전작 The Spectral Sorrows에서 보여주었던 독특한 사운드와 복잡한 구성은 한창 심화되면서, 동시에 데스 메탈의 저변 확대를 모색하는 밴드의 노력이 이 앨범에 집약되어 있다. Purgatory Afterglow는 전형적인 스웨덴 데스 메탈 사운드를 바탕으로 그들의 음악적 실험을 확대하고 있다. 데스 메탈 특유의 날카롭고 무거운 사운드에 프로그레시브적인 요소는 매우 큰 비중을 차지하고 있다. 직선적이고 공격적인 구조를 띠기 보다는 좀더 복잡한 멜로디와 리듬에서 더 많은 변화를 시도하면서 밴드는 단순한 데스 메탈 밴드이기를 거부하고 있다. 긴장감 넘치는 전개와 그로테스크한 분위기 속에서 밴드가 읊어내는 무거운 가사와 주제는 듣는 이에게 묵직한 감정을 전달하고 있다. 영세적인 퀄리티를 지녔던 1991년의 데뷔작 Nothing But Death Remains 이후 꾸준한 업그레이드를 보여주던 Edge Of Sanity가 드디어 일을 내고야 만 정규 4집음반 Purgatory Afterglow 이다. Death Metal에서 보여줄 수 있는 멜로디의 묘미와 짜임새있는 구성의 맛을 확인시켜주었다. 데뷔시절부터 지속적으로 Black Mark의 지원사격을 받아온 Edge Of Sanity의 실력이 일취월장하였음을 느낄 수 있는데, 탄탄한 연주력을 바탕으로 한 박력있는 리프전개와 프로그레시브적인 구성으로 대그룹으로 올라섰다. 귀에 착 감귀는 멜로디를 지닌 Twilight 같은 곡에서 Melodic Death Metal의 번성을 예고하였다면 조금 과장된 표현일까.

Another step towards true Progressive Metal, this album is loaded with a variety of sounds and styles all rooted in Melodic Death and pure Death Metal. As expected of the band, they succeed very well.

역시 비범한 작품. 댄 스와노라는 인물은 천재임이 분명합니다. 선 굵직굵직한 멜로디들로 유려하게, 그리고 거침없이 곡들을 이끌어갑니다. 음악 자체의 뼈대가 워낙 튼튼해서, 클린보컬의 사용도 방해없이 알맞습니다. 뭐하나 어우러짐을 해치는것없는 완벽한 밸런스. 맛깔나는 멜로디들 속에서 그 깊은 공간감을 즐기기만 하면되는 절정의 무쇠갑주 데스메탈.
