음악을 업으로 하는 사람은 늘 시대조류를 염두에 둘 수밖에 없는 것 같다. 트렌드란게 워낙 빨리 바뀌는지라 변화를 모색할 수밖에 없다. 그러나 변화에 대한 밴드의 인식과 팬들의 인식은 늘 괴리되어 있는 것 같다. 밴드 입장에서는 트렌드에 대해 신경을 써야 하는지라 이를 반영하여 인기있는 순간을 연장하고 싶다는 욕구에 시달린다. 밴드는 시대조류를 반영하기 때문에 변화는 팬베이스를 확장하는 계기가 될 수 있다는 생각을 하게 되는 것 같다. 그러나 팬의 입장에서는 변화가 늘 달가운 것은 아니다. 일단 그 밴드에 대한 기대가 있는 것도 하나의 이유가 될 수 있다. Machine Head의 경우 The Burning Red에서 뉴메탈을 시도하고, 후속작인 Supercharger에서 이 방향을 심화시켰는데, 팬의 입장에서는 즐거운 상황은 아니었다. 팬의 입장에서는 굳이 이들이 뉴메탈을 해야할 이유는 없었다. 뉴메탈을 듣고 싶다면 Linkin Park나 Limp Bizkit 같은 당대에 가장 쟁쟁한 밴드를 찾으면 되었다. 굳이 Machine Head가 이런식으로 변화를 표방할 필요는 없었다.

Burn My Eyes is a great example of Groove Metal done right. The riffs here are awesome, still with a Thrash edge and not too one-note.
