1987년 데스 메탈의 초기 시절 미국 플로리다에서 크리스 레이퍼트가 주축이 되어 결성한 데스 메탈 밴드 Autopsy는 여타 데스 메탈 밴드와는 달리 다양한 음악적 시도를 거듭하며, 매 앨범마다 진보된 형태로
다가 왔는데, 장르는 데스 메탈로 정의했지만, 그라인드 코어와 둠 메탈, 그리고 데스 메탈이 혼합된 특이한 형태의 데스 메탈로 볼 수 있다. 질척거리는 기타 리프, 그로울링과 느릿 느릿한 템포로 이어가다가 갑자기 빠른 템포로 급 전환하는 특이한 곡 조절을 한다.. 시체를 난자하는 듯한 기타 솔로잉, 파괴적인 드러밍, 굵직하면서도 날카로운 크리스 레이퍼트의 그로울링 등 그로테스크하면서도 끈적거리는 색다른 경험을 맛보게 될것이다.
