Surprised to hear so much rock, heavy metal, and classical on the famous depressive black metal album. I find the album cover rather cringe, but the music is very powerful with theatrical vocals and captivating guitar solos. Aug 30, 2023

The guitar playing really steals the show on this good album. All the guitarwork adds a lot of emotional depth and a wonderful sense of danger. Nice compositions and tight playing as well. The vocals lack variety though; I keep wishing he would go higher or lower at least once in a while. His tone of voice does add some atmosphere though (not just mindless cookie monster). Not perfect, but I enjoyed my introduction to these O.G.s of death metal. Aug 30, 2023

This album starts off with a big bang. A lot of great harsh vocals are on this predominately death metal record. Unfortunately, the clean vocals drone on too much and weaken a lot of the tracks. Interestingly, she doesn't have that problem when doing clean vocals louder. Despite the weak point, this album still has a strong haunting mood. All in all, somewhat good. Aug 30, 2023

This one's mostly rap metal, and track 9 is a brilliant example of how well that can work. Too bad on most other tracks she doesn't achieve the same level of entertaining & charismatic delivery. I think Otep is a better screamer than a rapper. Anyway, nothing's particularly bad. Actually a lot of the rolling nu metal riffs are good. Aug 30, 2023

The melodies really stay in my head. This is the best I've heard from Nordicwinter yet. The cover art is an extremely evocative French painting. The songs are just long enough to build up to astoundingly impactful moments, and it's a quite hypnotic experience, as depressive atmospheric BM can be when done this well. My pick of the day. Good vocals, great vocal melodies, mixed review for the lyrics, good instrumentation, beautiful recording, and some of the songwriting is just excellent. What surprises me about this album is how Filter sounds like a young & vital band while showing the discerning touch of a veteran artist. Not a perfect score, but it will be one of the most memorable albums of 2023. The songs flow so nicely. Aug 29, 2023

Great start for a new one-man-band. I'm Captain Obvious here, but it's the cosmic kind of atmospheric BM. Kind of like Mare Cognitum but less prog and more evil. Also, it has a nice air of tragedy to it. Another great artist for me to remember, and that logo is pure brilliance. Aug 25, 2023

The atmospheric BM songs are very satisfying - I especially love the field recording keeping time with the rhythm early on. The ambient / somewhat dungeon synth interludes are much weaker. Still a memorable EP and, with their new single, I'm really looking forward to the next album. Aug 25, 2023

Disharmonium is a series, now I learn, and it's 2 gorgeous masterpieces in a row so far. This time it's dissonant black metal, so you might get a shock if expecting atmospheric, but it will be an enjoyable shock. This album is so nightmarish and disturbing but magically it makes me relax even more than the previous one. Track 8 takes a break from dissonance and gets really melodic for a moment. Besides that it's dissonant bliss for 43 minutes. Aug 25, 2023

The high points of this one are so powerful that I almost feel like giving it a 100/100. Track 4 is definitely a perfect song, so I can see why it was chosen as a single. The blackgaze is so sparkling clean, but the frantic blackened vocals are so lo-fi that the contrast is captivating. Electronica and everything else is great. The overall effect is hypnotizing yet fiery. Aug 16, 2023

Melancholic in a heartfelt way. Cover art : pure ecstasy. Album title : woops, plural apostrophe. Another quality atmospheric BM album from the absurdly abundant 2021. Well done. Aug 14, 2023

Wonderful debut. Everything is decent or very good. While the vocals are extremely gratifying I would enjoy it more if he wouldn't try to fit in so many lyrics and focus instead on passion & freaking out. There are some face melting solos - what a nice surprise for an album that is such early-90s worship. The drums are energetic & pulverizing, though I have no clue who's playing them. There are clips of them playing with a drummer on their facebook... Anyway, good stuff. Aug 9, 2023

Undeniable in it's crushing power. It's more great old school death metal from them, and absolutely a contender for album of the year. Much like Blackbraid did this year, this current old school artist came back with their 2nd album displaying even more powerful music and rose to the top of their sub-genre. With Crypta as well, I kinda felt it coming. Anyway, however much recognition they get from this will not be enough. Pure metal mastery. Aug 6, 2023

I get lots of 'hell yeah' when I listen to this. I think the singer could work on projecting some more. The songs are all very good, but I have a feeling they'll find a way to something even greater in the future, and I hope they make it a longer album when they get there. Still very good & nasty instrumentation with a haunted atmosphere. Thick dark mud. Aug 6, 2023

Beautiful album on the softer side of metal. Also, it feels more gothic and less doom to me. Anyway, this one has a truly unforgettable sound, and an hour & 20 minutes of it. Aug 6, 2023

Come and Get Me Sucker is the chorus of the year so far. The nasty bluesy heaviness blew me away. There is tons of buzz around this album, but I doubted I would like it as much as all that just because it sounded too good to be true. Well, lucky me - I enjoy it even more than it's reputation promised. These songs energize me tons, and it's a thought-provoking experience as well. Total masterpiece. Aug 4, 2023

Really beautiful moments from start to finish. I can't find anything negative to say about this album. Some of their other albums feel more powerful to me, so I'll give it a 90 to leave space for the ones I liked even more. Aug 4, 2023

This one really caressed my mind with dark despair and made it inviting to hit replay. Whenever there is modern or urban black metal, I have this strong suspicion that it's gonna be really bad, but then time & time again it ends up sounding so good to me. Anyway, these songs are interesting and quite captivating. Aug 4, 2023

They fully captured the essence of what makes thrash fun on this album. These guys produce so much music in so many genres that I just can't keep track. Now this album takes the music industry by storm, and I can see why. Good job guys. Aug 4, 2023

The songs range from great to so-so, but even the so-so ones put a smile on my face. After 45 years of band activity, they're able to keep this extremely youthful sound, no faking, nothing forced, nothing weak. I'm impressed. Aug 4, 2023

I consider it good / not great. Maybe this will be an essential album to the biggest deathcore fans out there. Anyway, the last track is a great conclusion to the album. Also, all the famous guests help add a lot of vocal variety, so there's a bunch of highlights. Aug 4, 2023

I'll call this one very close in quality to the purple album. Ooo boy the highlights of this album are pure bliss. Those Smashing-Pumpkins guitar tones, that monumentally gratifying voice, and those raw riffs. So much to enjoy. Aug 4, 2023

The album cover is cool, but I take the music inside 1 million times more seriously than that cover. Sometimes music hits the right tone so perfectly that it's deeply aesthetic in terms of the art how to best play the material, and it's gratifying on a primitive level as well. This album does both of those. I just love every single second of this one. Aug 2, 2023

Very very well played songs. It's quite the tour of all the tricks & trademarks of black metal. I really wish they saved some of those musical ideas for the future, and developed some of these songs into longer compositions that have larger payoffs. There's so much potential here I won't be surprised if a future album from them ranks at the top of the Melodic Black Metal chart. Aug 2, 2023

Thick meaty guitar tone for the win. As recommended by Banger TV, and the recommendation paid off wonderfully. This is exciting and inspiringly extreme music, and I don't need to add 'only if you're into this genre' etc. Also, you have enough time in your day to try this EP. Aug 2, 2023

I expected good and I got even better. I didn't know I'd find such high quality going back this far. Immensely good vibes fill the album as is usual for these fantastic musicians. Each album has its own flavor, and I'll remember The Discovery as one of their albums to replay frequently. Aug 2, 2023

I tried hard to like this and I found moments here & there where everything is working nicely for me. Especially the segments that can pass for straight-up punk. There's no single song that I'm 100% positive about. The bad parts are sometimes extremely painful - especially the vocals on We Got This. In the end, I dislike it, but I thought I was going to dislike it much more strongly. Emphasize the positive! Aug 1, 2023

Nov 4, 2024

Their most representative album of the eighties, full of innovation and class, with forceful themes and a benchmark in style for the hard rock genre, in fact it is their best-selling work to date! My personal precise rating is (94/100) Faves: Criyng In The Rain and Don´t Turn Away! Oct 30, 2024
