Yes it's Harry-Potter-themed black metal. Definitely inspired by Summoning, but this album is so-so for me. It does get better toward the 2nd half of the album. Worth a listen, but they have better albums. Jul 23, 2023

I love imagining that some metal musicians are narrating an absurd circus and I'm in a crowd that finds it all disturbing but can't look away. In the end, I like The Sham Mirrors more, but this is special as well. Jul 23, 2023

I keep thinking to myself, "Maybe this will be his weak album," but it just never is. Maybe Nostalghia is becoming an underground legend. Jul 23, 2023

For me, this artist came out of nowhere and it's tons better than I expected. There's spoken word, a great mix of harsh & clean vocals, and the symphonic element has that film score feel to it. Absolutely beautiful music. Jul 23, 2023

I was in bliss the whole time. The performance is fully in the moment. It's so gratifying the way it's recorded. There are no weak songs. Also, it's quite nu metal without ever sounding cringey or childish. I even loved the track with Durst on it. I also hear some groove metal, but maybe I'm thinking too much. Anyway, I love this one, and want to listen to it alongside Deftones' Around the Fur. Jul 20, 2023

I really felt the passion and was impressed by a lot of the songs. It's far from a perfect album, but I think Gary sang in a way that matches the band's vibes perfectly - much better than Van Hagar. Without You and Josephina are total triumphs. The way track 6 started off, I thought it was going to be pointless, but it builds up to a high point very well. A couple of interludes ramble a little, but it's a solid album I want to listen to more. Jul 20, 2023

I didn't like this one as much as I thought I would. I loved Hope, and the execution is good throughout. I felt kind of teased like it was promising to get full and beautifully gothic metal like Joy Division + heavy distortion but that sound barely materialized. I had some little complaints about weak lyrics and then the intro track is followed by a track that has its own intro. I need to deduct points here & there. Still listenable, but not my favorite from them. Jul 20, 2023

It has such interesting moods that it's clear these musicians have attained great control over what mood they convey. Not to make the sub-genre issue even more complicated, but I find it somewhat similar to sludge quite often. Fundamentally it's black metal with some crust punk parts. All in all, good stuff. Oh wow. This does have some influence from Sabbath's Vol. 4 like the cover implies, but it's actually more Sabbath's first 2 albums with an emphasis on the bluesy feel with lots of romp and lots of doom. It does all this really well and with swagger. I can say they deserve to use that album cover, and that I look forward to hearing more from them. Jul 19, 2023

The sound is just what I'm looking for, and so is the cover art. The only thing this album doesn't do is give enough music. I have a feeling a longer release from them will achieve a much higher impact. Not to complain though; I listen to this one quite a few times and still really love it. Jul 19, 2023

Some songs are good and others are very good. I especially like track 8. Jul 19, 2023

Satisfying as all heck. It's full of black metal conventions, but I also get the sense that they're playing what's really in their hearts as opposed to imitating other bands. Jul 19, 2023

Their music is rich in atmosphere and it conveys a variety of emotions even at one moment. These aspects are even more powerful on this album because these veterans perfected these songs. It's really a joy to behold. Concealing Fate and Nocturne especially get my heart racing. Jul 19, 2023

There's a lot of buzz about this one. Although it seems a lot of people like it a lot more than me, I just love how these long piano passages match up with the mostly mid-paced doom. Anyway it's a great album from a band that has their own unique sound, and they deserve tons of respect for that. Jul 15, 2023

Mathcore that I like a lot more than usual. A great recommendation from The Metal Meltdown. Top-tier energy throughout and track 10 (the title track) is pure fire. Jul 15, 2023

Mostly I was enjoying it just a little, but the drumming makes everything work a lot better, and my score would be much lower if there wasn't such pro drumming here. Jul 15, 2023

Even if you're not into themes like evil, hostility to the human race, & sacrilege; I'll still recommend hearing this once. The compositions are enjoyable and the sound of the percussion can really grow on you. Jul 15, 2023

The styles of all the most iconic nu metal bands, performed with no cringiness. The mood is dirty & dystopian, and it's fast aggressive music with a fun 16-bit album cover. Extreme amounts of fun. Jul 15, 2023

Bad. Also, it's nothing like the cover. No bad-boy rapping to metal here. A couple parts with boring talking are maybe supposed to be rap. Way too much sappy garbage with bad lyrics and lame singing. The Pixies cover on the bonus track is great; a great song stays great. Never Said It (another bonus track) is good too. Most of the songs are boring though. Jul 15, 2023

I expected pretty bad, but it's quite good music with great recording. The clean singing gets a tiny bit annoying once in a while, but even most of the clean vocals are all right, which is impressive for metalcore. It's not my thing, but I still think it's pretty good. Jul 15, 2023

Sadness starts infiltrating me as these songs play. Not like the crushing sadness of a melancholic BM band; Agalloch's songwriting implies the sadness and the experience is so precious. I used to listen to this one a lot, but now I realize how prominent the gothic style is on most of the songs. I don't know if I care to distinguish gothic from dark metal, but I'm sure this album is extremely powerful & special - as good as music gets. Jul 13, 2023

A pretty-good album by Kamelot's standards is actually a very very very good album. I find the songs all good, and I even was enjoying the interludes. Most of all the vocals are insanely powerful on this one - all well-written vocal melodies, delivered with Roy's genius touch, and with genuine emotion. A very good album with mind-blowing singing. Blackened death metal from an unknown country. This one really grew on me - it made me want to play it again & again, and I started liking it more each time. Yes that cover art makes me swoon. Actually, I'm curious who created it; it's the kind of thing Midjourney AI always attempts but ends up ruining it in its nonsensical way. Anyway, embrace the mystery and try this brand new album. The melodies in this album pull at my heart noticeably more than his 2023 album, but still a tiny bit weaker than that 2021 album, which has the most clever songwriting he's had yet. I'm still stoked at discovering this one - captivating BM and Lovecraftian themes. I'll be listening to this regularly. Jul 13, 2023

Tracks 2 to 7 are just gorgeous to my ears. The first song and ambient track at the end are nowhere near that level. Still recommended though; this is definitely the same kind of material as in his 2021 masterwork, just a little below. Jul 12, 2023

It's the same style I love so much, but on their later albums this sound is so much more refined and just sweeps me away more. Of course this makes sense considering how early this is in their monstrous discography. Jul 12, 2023

Nov 4, 2024

Their most representative album of the eighties, full of innovation and class, with forceful themes and a benchmark in style for the hard rock genre, in fact it is their best-selling work to date! My personal precise rating is (94/100) Faves: Criyng In The Rain and Don´t Turn Away! Oct 30, 2024
