Bathory (Quorthon) is the type of band that is always innovating. They managed to invent 2 completely original styles of metal, Black Metal with 1984’s Bathory, and Viking Metal 6 years later on Hammerheart. They toyed with this style on 88’s Blood Fire Death, and finally the genre came into fruition here.
While this album is amazingly unique for its time, I do find a slight step down from Blood Fire Death, which is odd because the bookend Viking Metal tracks of that album were my favorite. It turns out, slower paced epic Viking Metal doesn’t feel as powerful without a ton of Blackened Thrash pummeling you in between. Hammerheart has some truly epic songs that amaze (One Rode to Asa Bay is a masterpiece) but the majority of the material doesn’t leave me in the same awe as say, Blood Fire Death or A Fine Day to Die. Since this album is much more uplifting and much less dark, the riffs aren’t really evil or sinister; rather, they are just there. In all honesty, I can’t remember any notable riffs off the album, as it puts much more emphasis on atmosphere and Quorthon’s vocals. The rhythm section is slow and monotonous, but it does create a martial mood befitting the themes.
Off of those notes though, this is still a fantastic album, and Quorthon’s vocals are actually quite awesome. He’s evolved from a pure Black Metal shriek to what sounds like a haggard yell very capable of hitting and holding notes, which was necessary to make the jump from Black to Vik ... See More

스크리밍과 클린의 경계에 있는 에픽한 보컬, 느리고 장중한 전개, 적절한 배킹 보컬과 키보드는 자연히 바이킹의 심상을 떠올리게 한다. 보컬/기타/키보드/녹음/믹싱/특수 효과/작곡/작사/제작/편곡을 맡아 원 맨 쇼를 선보인 Quorthon의 의도가 그대로 표현된 완성도 높은 음반이다. 대표곡 One Rode to ASA Bay는 바이킹 족의 쇠퇴와 기독교화를 다루는 곡으로, 음반의 마지막 곡이라는 위치를 생각했을 때 비장미가 돋보인다. Quorthon이 스웨덴의 기독교 기득권을 비판하며 바이킹 족의 전통을 부흥해 대항하려는 의도에서 본작을 만들었다는 것을 생각하면 음악의 내용과 주제에도 상당한 고찰과 정성을 기울였음을 알 수 있다. 블랙 메탈이라는 장르를 만들고 스스로의 성취와 한계를 뛰어넘은 시도가 감탄스럽다.

오늘날 위대한 밴드로 추앙받는 팀들은 각자가 한 장르의 형성에 지대한 영향력을 행사한 밴드들이라고 해도 과언이 아니다. 먼저 Judas Priest와 Iron Maiden은 정통 Heavy Metal의 형성에, Metallica는 Thrash Metal에, Helloween은 Power Metal에, Mayhem은 Black Metal, Chuck Schuldiner의 Death는 Death Metal씬이 만들어지는데에 기여를 했다. 그런데 한 밴드가 다른 여러 특정 장르의 형성에 결정적인 영향력을 발휘한 사례를 찾기는 힘들다. 물론 지엽적인 영향력을 발휘하는 경우는 흔하다. 가령 당시 Helloween에 몸담고 있던 Kai Hansen은 Judas Priest에 심취했던 인물로 이 선배 밴드가 간접적으로 파워 메탈씬 형성에 영향을 끼친 것은 분명하다. Metallica 역시 정통 헤비 메탈 밴드들의 간접적인 사정권 안에 있었으며, Death와 Mayhem 역시 스래쉬 메탈을 자양분 삼아 신장르를 개척했다. 하지만, 개중에는 두 장르에 걸쳐 직접적으로 강력한 영향력을 행사한 밴드 역시 분명 존재했다. 바로 Quorthon이 이끈 Bathory가 바로 그러하다. 대중음악의 여명기, 즉 장르의 고착화가 충분히 이루어지지 않은 시기에는 특정 밴드나 아티스트가 강력한 영향력을 바탕으로 장르를 개척해내는 경우가 흔했지만, 그 이후 장르의 분화가 심화된 80년대 이후에는 더이상 여러 분야를 개척하는 그런 ... Change of direction from Quorthon and what do we get is the first viking metal. Personally some of the tracks drag on a bit too much,good but not great.

I liked this a lot more than I thought I was going to, and I can take it a lot more seriously than I usually take viking metal. This album has an intense aura of sadness & suffering that gives weight to the violent themes. Respect to Bathory for both vision and skills in composition.

On "Hammerheart" album, Quorthon is now more interested in creating and communicating a certain epic and atmospheric feeling, and doesn't attempt to reach supersonic speeds with his guitar. Album shows the Epic side of Viking/Heavy Metal with acoustic parts, female voices, sporadically used keyboards, clean vocals with raspy touch, intelligence and emotional integrity.

1990년에 워낙 명반들이 많이 나와 묻힐 수도 있었던 앨범. 이쪽 장르를 개척한 앨범으로 높은 인지도를 보여주고 있으나 시대를 아우르는 보편성 측면에서는 익스트림 계열의 한계를 여실히 보여준다고 봐야할 듯

고대 바이킹의 영혼을 소환해 낸 수준의 문제작. 본작의 장르가 바이킹 메탈인 이유는 그냥 바이킹이 만들고 바이킹이 연주하고 바이킹이 노래한 작품이기 때문입니다. 느릿느릿하지만 장엄하고 위엄넘치는 음악으로, 그 묵직한 무게감이 청자를 압도합니다. 반복에서 오는 미학을 최대치로 뽑아냈다고 생각하며, 바이킹 메탈계의 법전 같은 작품이라 느낍니다.
