Switching from folk songs to the most furious black metal, this album is genius in its contrasts. Also, even though I listen for the metal, I really like these traditional songs the way Panopticon plays them. Aug 7, 2022

Deep dark atmosphere and crushing evil on this album. At 59 minutes long, I feel like I just kept going deeper and deeper into something. Aug 7, 2022

This guy's a monster. With all the proggy and ethereal stuff, he remembers to include some plain and gratifying guitarwork, giving his songs the perfect balance. I just want this guy to produce more and more. Aug 7, 2022

There's a lot of variety on this album, and Textures deserves respect for that. I feel like it too often gets into melodic metalcore territory and that it's less enjoyable when it's there. I was kinda surprised I couldn't get into they're style as much as Persefone or someone similar. Considering that, it's pretty good. Aug 7, 2022

I have very mixed feelings about this one. It sounds well played, and the terrifying tone is very effective. It did make me feel pretty negative and in a bad mood. Also, I was kind of hoping for some fun and playful theatrics like Lorna Shore does, so I guess I was disappointed by this. I can't deny this band though; they're pros. Aug 7, 2022

The despair here is really impressive, like it brings me on a journey. Maybe it's just coincidence, but I hear tones that remind of post-black albums that come many years after this. Soothing at times and grandiose and dramatic at others, this is a very melodic and enjoyable album. Aug 7, 2022

I hear some thoughtfulness in the composition and real musical skills here. I'm not getting the seething passion though, like you hear from something like Portishead. I also don't hear the underground-feeling atmosphere from something like Massive Attack. I feel like this album is missing something, and those two bands are the closest ideas I have to what the missing ingredient is. Aug 7, 2022

What a guitarist! He has a real magic touch on this short album. At some parts it sounds kinda loopy & danceable. This is a great djent album. Aug 5, 2022

It's rare to hear Deathcore or any harsh vocals used to convey affection and sadness, but Whitechapel does it well. Congrats on having both the soft and the heavy parts sound so engaging. Also, I hear some properly done Katatonia influence in the songwriting, which is a definite plus. Aug 3, 2022

It's good walking music and I love the style, but it's not as powerful as Profane, and almost as good as Wolves Among the Ashes. Aug 3, 2022

A lot of pretty good songs. Only Dicke Titten and Adieu are great in my opinion. Listening to the title track, I could tell Till would've found a much better way to sing it back in the early 2000s. More effort could've made the album better. Aug 3, 2022

Noice. I liked hearing Hopeless and Beaten on the radio, but some of the non-single songs are a little better than that. The scratchy guitar part on Lost in the Grandeur is pure gold for me; think what you want of me. My Confession with those grooves makes me really happy too. Aug 3, 2022

I'm impressed by the quality of this album. I feel like it's a little more black metal than death metal. Also, the cover is so intense, I don't recommend showing it to your parents, even if they're atheists, and even if you're 85. Anyway, Virtus Asinaria totally blew my mind, and the rest of the album is solidly thick and gorgeous. Aug 3, 2022

Their death metal is unique and more atmospheric than I expected. There's a skosh of black metal in a couple of places. Thanks to Questy for making me aware of this one. Aug 3, 2022

I like what I was hearing, but without getting too excited about the compositions. Still, I have to respect these guys: their career is long and they do a great job of making symphonic match beautifully with death metal. Jul 30, 2022

I like how they include a bunch of genres of metal like groove metal, and the last song even resembles Alice in Chains. It's all done in a way that feels like a natural mix. However, I think it's not quite as good as Profane. Jul 30, 2022

I've been looking for good blackened death metal bands that do an even mix of both. That's what I hear here, and it definitely works well. Also, congratulations to the zombie lady. Jul 30, 2022

So awesome and uplifting. At one point I think he transforms into George Michael. Anyway, Townsend's a genius. Jul 30, 2022

Disc 1 has such great music on it, and Disc 2 is only ambient stuff that I can't stand to listen to. You might as well replace Disc 2 with polka or ragtime; the djent and the ambient totally don't match. First disc alone would maybe be a perfect score. Average them together and I'll give it 85. Next time I'll listen to just Disc 1. Jul 30, 2022

I love the bluesy tones that show up here and there. Overall a good plodding doom album, and I'm glad the guy on the cover found his overlord. Jul 29, 2022

In the opening minutes I had some doubts about the quality on this one, but soon after I started hearing tons & tons of energy coming from how the riffs were timed, and then the vocals seemed better in how they sounded in their own zone. If that doesn't make any sense, then I just started loving it. Jul 29, 2022

After some minutes this album worked its magic on me, so yes it's super enjoyable. The gothic moments stand out as some of the brightest. Not that it's a bad thing, but I don't see those moments as so original, but as some Joy Division influence. Also the death doom is very good. Jul 29, 2022

I thought it would be so-so, but this high quality stuff gave me a pleasant surprise. The power and energy really cheered me up. The symphonic elements are a great match for their type of deathcore. Jul 28, 2022

Another great one by Grafvitnir. It's so refreshing in its cold creepiness. The scratchy sound doesn't just blast you for shock value; it really serenades. Listen to this one and remind yourself why you love black metal. Jul 28, 2022

At some points this album really shines, and at its worst it's so-so. Sometimes the songs are too focused on the singer. Some slower songs on the 2nd half of the album really show how great the singer is. So many bands put a really slow song at the end of an album, and it's always the weakest due to being too loose and lacking tension between the instruments. Taida adds all those missing points with her voice because she's a total pro. Jul 28, 2022

I love this one so much, when I was in the middle of the album today I wanted to get to the end so I could play it again and again and cram tons of listens into one day. Such high quality from Drudkh from the early years and today as well. Jul 27, 2022

I already liked their music, but this album was even better than I expected. Almost every song is great except for one of the slow songs toward the end. Lajon can really sing any way he chooses, and on this album he puts a lot of life and soul into that golden voice. Jul 27, 2022

Fun and over the top gothic metal. Some catchy rhythms and really groovy melodies show up in a couple of places. Maybe it's not for everyone because of the campiness, but I enjoyed it. Jul 27, 2022

Nov 4, 2024

Their most representative album of the eighties, full of innovation and class, with forceful themes and a benchmark in style for the hard rock genre, in fact it is their best-selling work to date! My personal precise rating is (94/100) Faves: Criyng In The Rain and Don´t Turn Away! Oct 30, 2024

완벽하다. 지금와서 painkiller 정도의 힘을 기대하는 것은 무리지만 관록과 경험으로 영그러진 놀라운 앨범을 냈다. 엔지니어링도 크게 한몫했다. Oct 31, 2024
