It's a pretty great Power Metal album, loaded with anthemic numbers, but it's also got some tracks that don't work as well like Princess Aurora. Inconsistent. Jul 27, 2024

Better than their previous mess, but this is still Loudness in their weird, experimental era. I like "Coming Home" so it's not a useless album. Jul 27, 2024

"Comfy" might be an odd descriptor for a Metal album, but this is one of the comfiest Metal albums I've ever heard. That cover art certainly helps. A uniquely Autumnal experience in a fairytale wood. Jul 27, 2024

I've always preferred Lacuna Coil's first two albums. They are the doomiest and closest to actual Gothic Metal. This one is very strong and full of passionate performances. Jul 27, 2024

Personally, never been a big fan of Lacrimosa's style. It's too operatic with not enough focus on guitars. Rhythm section is super boring too. Builds awesome atmosphere in places, but there's little payoff due to the lack of energy or power. Jul 27, 2024

This album was so much fun, the best of their experimental years in my opinion. Of course their Thrash material is best, but I loved hearing Kreator's take on something a bit more reserved and catchy. Was a blast to experience. Jul 27, 2024

Another masterwork of Dark Metal. Gothic, Doomy, depressing... Katatonia always delivers. I find this one underrated, very, very strong record. Jul 27, 2024

Kamelot's first masterpiece. They found their true style here and never looked back. Energetic, anthemic, melodic, powerful. Masterwork of Power Metal. Jul 27, 2024

Very weird stuff, especially coming from this band who was very different a few years prior. The songs retaining doomy Gothic influence are the best, and the songs leaning too far into the Avant-Garde are the worst. Jul 27, 2024

Another phenomenal delivery of Melodeath. Might even be my favorite of their old school Melodeath albums. In Flames have always had a knack for making their songs "catchy" and that still holds true even on their older Death Metal material; this one ends with many of the finest songs of their 90's era. Jul 27, 2024

Fair collection of covers, but some of the choices are baffling. They do incredible justice to David Bowie, but the Alex Harvey cover is so boring. It's a crapshoot what you'll get with each song. Jul 27, 2024

Heavens Gate's swansong is an unfortunate disappointment that leaves behind most Power Metal for a straight Heavy Metal sound. And it's littered with terrible German humor. Jul 27, 2024

This one was a slight improvement over the sophomore for me. They brought back some much needed energy for a few songs, and the songwriting became more interesting. Jul 26, 2024

Great epic Black Metal, riffs are simple but catchy, drumming is energetic and driving. Only positives here aside from the worthless interludes. Jul 26, 2024

Plainly one of the worst Metal albums I have ever heard. Chaotic, mindless, tuneless. Jul 26, 2024

First time I've seen the label "Dark Progressive Metal" on this site, but it fits. Prog with flavors of Power and Gothic Metal make for a powerful, moody, energetic listen that is nearly perfect on all fronts. Love just about everything about this. Jul 26, 2024

An improvement on their psychedelic, droning Funeral Doom style. "The Secret of the Secret" is one of their best tracks. Jul 26, 2024

It's always fascinating when a Metal band suddenly goes non-Metal. They usually either shit the bed, or totally own the new genre. This is thankfully an example of the later - and some of the best Dark Folk on the market. Jul 26, 2024

Another amazing triumph from Emperor. There's a bit more Death Metal influence in the riffs this time, which make them extra meaty and dark. Jul 26, 2024

One of the most insane albums I've ever heard. It's not exactly... to my taste, but I have great admiration for the ability and creativity on display here. Incredibly unique album. Jul 26, 2024

For as much as I adored "Images and Words" and to a lesser extent "Awake," I was surprised at how much less I enjoyed this one, which is considered their magnum opus. It's a great album, but I find the music much less evocative, so it disappointed me a bit. Jul 26, 2024

The band's debut album is inconsistent and unfocused. However, it still holds quite a few great tracks and offers a glimpse into their latent ability. Jul 26, 2024

For me this is quite good, dark aggressive Black Metal. Not sure why the rating is poor. Jul 26, 2024

Dark Tranquility take on a much more subdued and Gothic style here. Not quite as good as previous works for me, but still a fantastic album. "The Sun Fired Blanks" is one of their best songs. Jul 26, 2024

Masterful solo album that matches edge of Sanity for quality, just displaying a different angle of Dan Swano's genius. Jul 26, 2024

Nicely crafted almost Neoclassical riffs. The issue for me is they don't sound dark enough. But the energy and melody are great. Jul 26, 2024

More boring Dungeon Synth/Ambient from Varg. Nothing against the genre, he's just not particularly good at it. Jul 26, 2024

A lot more Deathcore on this one. Very heavy, passable, but not memorable. Jul 26, 2024

At Vance play a rather traditional flavor of Power Metal based in Heavy Metal riffs and anthems more so than speed or melodic leads. It's good, but far from my favorite style of the genre. Jul 26, 2024

An embarrassing remix album, or something. The band delving even further into Avant-Garde madness. Jul 26, 2024

3 days ago

Great classic album with incredible songs like "The Evil That Men do","Moonchild" or "The Clairvoyant". Mar 4, 2025

Mar 10, 2025

I'm pretty sure this is the best debut in history. Sonata Arctica immediately does what they do best and the result is amazing. "FullMoon" is a great song. Mar 11, 2025

Great album but not at the level of the debut in my opinion. The band tries a bit of progressive direction with pretty good results, although some songs are quite weak. The end of the album is great. Good job Sonata! Mar 11, 2025

DT caught my attention with their previous album and this one confirms my thoughts on them. I´m not so fond of their old stuffs but these 2 keep me on my feet and I will go back to them regularly. Mar 12, 2025

Very good album by Dream Theater. As always Mar 4, 2025

The "Ram It Down" is a very underrated album, but in 1988 in the german Metal Hammer looked like a new classic by the soundcheck.Otherwise the "Ram it Down" and the "Hard As Iron"(with thundering riff) are great fast classic Priest songs. All in all i think only the "Love Zone" is the only one problematic song and the Lp is great.. Mar 8, 2025
