Boring, even by this band's standards. The songs just go nowhere and offer little. Over and Over averts this, being catchy and having some feeling. Jan 26, 2024

King just does too much with his vocals on this one. He needs to tone it back. A few tracks become too cringey to enjoy. There's also gold here though, liberal Thrash and Gothic influence in these songs, "The Exorcist" being the best the band ever did. Jan 26, 2024

Great album displaying the debut of Khan's vocals. Unfortunately, neither Khan nor the band had truly found their sound yet, so it's a transitional album. Regardless, underrated for what it is. Jan 26, 2024

This was a huge surprise given their prior track record. Yeah, I like this one better than the debut, by a long shot! Great record. Jan 26, 2024

The vocal definitely take some getting used to. But the music is really great, especially when they get doomy on penultimate track "Solitary Death in Nocturnal Woodlands." Jan 26, 2024

Insanely heavy, dense, and evil. However, the songs do lack individual identity. Jan 26, 2024

This album saw the band start to focus on ballads between the powerful psuedo Thrash USPM tracks. Of course it's backed by a strong concept story. But, the songwriting is still lacking in places. Jan 26, 2024

One of the band's most aggressive albums at times, after-into opener "Push" pushes the limits of how heavy this cheesy Power Metal band can get. Of course, it's also full of Pop Metal classics like "Hey Lord!" Jan 26, 2024

I found this much weaker than the previous album. Relies purely on epic sound, and not so much in the way of fantastic classic riffage. Still a good album, but it disappointed me. Jan 25, 2024

Sacrifice for Honor is probably the best song they'd done at the time. Incorporating some Dungeon Synth influences was a strong point. Still, none of the band's albums have truly impressed me. Jan 25, 2024

Without a doubt the strongest album they had released at the time. It's powerful, aggressive, yet catchy, and also an entertaining concept album. Despite having a few of the band's peak tracks, it also has scattered poorer tracks as well, in fact opening the album with a dreadful 2+minute intro. So, it lacks front to back playability. Jan 25, 2024

Meaty Funeral Doom that focuses more on old-school Death Doom riffs than standard Funereal atmospherics. Good stuff. Jan 25, 2024

Phenomenal dark Prog Metal, with Gothic and Power Metal undertones. Full of passion, energy, and melancholy. Nearly perfect debut, not sure why it receives middling reviews! Jan 25, 2024

Quite standard Melodeath, bordering on Gothic or folky in places, but not enough to really set it apart. Still a strong record. Jan 25, 2024

Inconsistent and far too goofy for my liking. There are a few good ideas here, but they are overwhelmed by the seemingly random experimentation and directionless density. Jan 25, 2024

Not a good record, but not nearly as bad as many make it out to be. At the very least, it definitely has some interesting and unique aspects to it, and the songs maintain a bit of Thrash energy rather than falling to total chuggy Groove. Messy, but not without merit. Jan 25, 2024

Everyone complains about the vocals. Well, I much prefer this vocalist because he actually says the lyrics instead of growling indiscernibly. The music is still great, but unfortunately not nearly as good as the masterpiece BDM of the previous work. Jan 25, 2024

Bolt Thrower's first drop in quality since their steady rise to power. It's still a great album, but the significant Groove Metal influence here results in Bolt Thrower's already samey songs being even more one note. Jan 25, 2024

This thing was too bloated and just not heavy enough for me. Really, there's very little focus on the "Metal" aspect, with the emphasis being placed on the theater-esque performances and concept. That would be fine, if any of the performances were particularly memorable, but most often they aren't, and have trouble keeping my attention for these long runtimes. Jan 25, 2024

Yeah, it was their weakest album yet. It's not terrible, but its reputation is rather warranted. Mostly boring Groove Metal, a sad mix of humor and tough guy act. Jan 24, 2024

Fantastic release by Angra. This one is underrated, even stronger than the last two in my opinion. Gentle Change stands out as one of their most unique tracks. Jan 24, 2024

Angel Dust are back, and they lost no power in the off time. Stylistically they shifted a bit, playing Power Metal now, but there's still a ton of Speed Metal and even Thrash influence in the riffs and drumming. Fantastic album. Jan 24, 2024

Strong debut that stands beside most of the band's discography. Slight Blackened sound to this one. Jan 24, 2024

Goofy and abrasive, not a great mix. No pleasure in listening to this. Jan 24, 2024

A strong EP in isolation, but I do find it to be the band's weakest material upon the time of release. Delves a bit further into the cursed Slam Death genre. Jan 24, 2024

A surprisingly mature debut EP that manages to be better than many of the band's full lengths. Cristina has great vocals even at this stage in her career. Jan 24, 2024

Unfortunately weaker than their EP. Synths take a backseat, chorus-like vocals lead the music, and it has a lot less heaviness and energy. Jan 21, 2024

Whiplash regain some of their speed and riffage. A nice comeback. This one has a lot more Speed Metal. Not the best album in this style, but definitely a sufficient return to form. Jan 21, 2024

Ulver go off the deep end here. Definitely not enough Metal to call this a Metal album. Primarily an Electronic/Ambient album with brief forays into Avant-Garde Metal. Not terrible, but they can do a lot better. Jan 21, 2024

They build grand atmospheres, but the drumming and guitars are so simple and boring. Jan 21, 2024

3 days ago

Great classic album with incredible songs like "The Evil That Men do","Moonchild" or "The Clairvoyant". Mar 4, 2025

Mar 10, 2025

I'm pretty sure this is the best debut in history. Sonata Arctica immediately does what they do best and the result is amazing. "FullMoon" is a great song. Mar 11, 2025

Great album but not at the level of the debut in my opinion. The band tries a bit of progressive direction with pretty good results, although some songs are quite weak. The end of the album is great. Good job Sonata! Mar 11, 2025

DT caught my attention with their previous album and this one confirms my thoughts on them. I´m not so fond of their old stuffs but these 2 keep me on my feet and I will go back to them regularly. Mar 12, 2025

Very good album by Dream Theater. As always Mar 4, 2025

The "Ram It Down" is a very underrated album, but in 1988 in the german Metal Hammer looked like a new classic by the soundcheck.Otherwise the "Ram it Down" and the "Hard As Iron"(with thundering riff) are great fast classic Priest songs. All in all i think only the "Love Zone" is the only one problematic song and the Lp is great.. Mar 8, 2025
