As soon as I started the album, 'Dear Diary,' blasted my eardrums off. I got the feeling that it is the most similar to 'Crucify Me'. Nothing is better than biting off a beloved album from their past when a band is in creative cul-de-sac, right? However, after listening to the whole album, I realized that this EP is more respectable than I thought at first.
Yes, this is their attempt at return to the source. Breakdowns in multiple songs, heavier sounds (than amo), and lyrics embodying millennial anger. But let's not reduce this EP to that, since there are a few things BMTH pulled off spectacularly (at least from my point of view).
To start off, it achieves the perfect balance between their recent albums and past albums. There are obvious pop music influences such as enthralling choruses from songs like Parasite Eve and Obey, atmospheric synth touches, and YUNGBLUD feature. However, this album has what amo lacks - the spine. At its worst, amo borrows from the most sorry pop music cliché like stomach turning pop punk sound and patchwork of Drake-y synths (and fucking Grimes feature. Yikes). In contrast, in this EP, BMTH knows what place their music has to start - the end result is fantastic mix of pop and metalcore. Cuts like Parasite Eve and Ludens are really sights to behold (or pieces to hearken, I'm not good at English).
Plus, the ethos of this EP is also admirable. They just want to make a good & fun song, and it just shows. I don't know how to phrase this well, so just see this: 'Dear Diary,' is angry as hell and they are not afraid to write hilarious lyrics like 'God is a shit head, and we're his rejects', 'One Day...' sounds like both like their own shot at ballad song and blatant My Immortal (by Evanescence) ripoff, and 'Kingslayer' is a Babymetal song. This just comes off as if their field of fuck is as infertile as Margaret Thatcher's corpse.
And let's not forget 'Teardrops', which pays admirable homage to our one and only Linkin Park (+ Itch for the Cure = Cure for the Itch from Hybrid Theory). One line from that song ('The emptiness is heavier than you think') sounds just like a part of refrain from a Linkin Park song. Overall, very solid EP, and I look forward to where their next album will be heading towards.
PS. Lyrics are inspired by what Oli had been thinking when he was in darker place, and he's OK now. I hope my comments on the lyrics do not sound inconsiderate.

Disclaimer : I may be a clueless fanboy who absorbs one's idol's shit without a single scruple. Considering Metal Kingdom is dedicated to all kind of Metal music, I should have written this on RYM or Herbmusic, but as you can see, I didn't. Please read this as a review for a 'Music album', not for a 'Metal music album'.

Simply put, this is the worst BMTH album of all time. The entire track list is a slog, and the only songs with any sort of replay-ability are a few of the singles. Ultimately, the critical failure of this album comes from its lack of innovation. Bring Me The Horizon has spent over a decade changing the metal scene with release after release. However, NeX GEn contains nothing bu... Read More

Bring Me The Horizon
Read More
