City of Evil, 셀프 타이틀 앨범, Nightmare 앨범은 대단했다. 이런 부류의 밴드를 좋아하지 않는 나 같이 편협한 청자의 귀까지 뚫어버릴 정도로 이 앨범들은 정말 매력적이었다. 그들의 초기 앨범들에 대해서도 관심이 가서 데뷔 앨범인 Sounding the Seventh Trumpet까지 들어보았다. 하지만, 이들의 데뷔 앨범은 조악할 뿐만 아니라 전혀 취향에도 맞지 않는 그런 음악이었다. Avenged Sevenfold가 신세대 밴드의 전형이라는 사실은 인지하고 있었지만, 이 앨범에서는 후속 앨범들에서 보인 전통적인 헤비 메탈과의 연계가 매우 희박하다는 사실이 발견된다. 오로지 이 앨범에는 메탈코어 사운드만이 지배적이다. 이 분야를 정말 좋아하지 않는 사람들에게는 듣는 것이 꽤나 고역이 될 그런 앨범으로밖에 보이지 않는다. City of Evil이나 Nightmare에서 보여주었던 과거와 현재의 절묘한 배합 같은 것은 이 앨범에서 찾을 수 없다. 확실한 것은 Avenged Sevenfold는 대중음악씬에 횡행하는 천재적인 뮤지션들은 아니었다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. 그들은 해를 거듭하면서 점차 자신들만의 사운드를 구축하고 고심하면서 성장한 밴드라는 것을 깨달았다.

어벤지드 세븐폴드의 정규 3집.
현재의 어벤지드 세븐폴드 앨범들 보다 과소평가 된 희대의 명작이자 이들을 메인스트림으로 옮겨준 앨범.
당시 친구의 추천으로 이 밴드를 듣게 되었는데 아직 린킨파크랑 슬립낫에서 벗어나지 못한 나에게는 상당한 충격이었다.

My most played album #434. Avenged Sevenfold - City Of Evil. Sold 2.5 million copies worldwide after people stopped buying records. Amazing.
